In the beginning, starting your own business seems exciting and fun. After a while, you realize that there is a lot more work than you may have initially expected, and the initial excitement begins to wear off. But, if you follow certain steps, you can keep this from happening to you, and you will always be excited to get up every day and operate your business. There are many mistakes that entrepreneurs make that cause them to not have the excitement about their businesses they once had, and here are ten of them: Appearances are everything: Most small business owners can't afford to have the biggest offices or the fanciest equipment or furniture, but they spend money on these things anyway, and end up not seeing the profits they originally expected, which is going to seriously diminish their enthusiasm for the business. You don't need to have all of the fancy bells and whistles to sell a great product or service. In fact, if all you have is a closet in your home to operate out of, you can make it work for you. Save your money for more important things. You are going to need it. Never lose that competitive spirit: If you do not have a competitive spirit, you are not going to get very far in the world of entrepreneurship. As long as you are staying competitive, you are going to remain on top. Once you lose that competitive edge, you will find that your profits are not nearly what they could be, or even what they once were. If you find that you really don't have this spirit any longer, it may be time to consider a career change. You need to give your customers value for their money: If you are selling the same thing as the guy next door, you will need to have something to give customers an incentive to do business with you instead of that guy. Offer your customers the value they are looking for, and you will find that people want to work with you, because you are offering them more than anyone else is. Make sure that you offer them value that they will not get anywhere else. Lifetime customers are essential to any business: Once you make a sale, don't let that be the end of the interaction between you and that customer. Take steps to go that extra mile, and take care of all of their after-sale needs. This is going to go a long way in earning you lifetime customers. Not only are you going to see more profits by having regular customers, because these customers are going to be so happy with your products and services they are going to tell others. Word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertising, and lifetime customers will not hesitate to let others know about your business. Take your business seriously: You may have expected to have a lot more freedom by running your own business, but in most cases, this couldn't be further from the truth. In time, you will have the freedom you desire, but in the beginning, there is going to be a lot of hard work in order to make a business successful. Find a way to balance your work life and your personal life, and you will be successful in all that you do. Staffing: Some entrepreneurs hire way too many people, more than they can really afford at first. Others don't think that they need help, and do not hire enough, or any staff. It is important to figure out right away, even before you start your business while you are creating your business plan, to figure out exactly what kind of help you need, and the staff you are going to need, if any. Take a look at how many customers you want to have, and decide whether or not you can handle this type of volume on your own, or if you are going to need to hire people to help you. Don't forget about virtual workers, such as freelancers, which can save you a lot of money. Watch your cash flow: You need to make sure that you always have a cash flow, because there are always going to be expenses when you run your own business. Always make sure that you know exactly where your cash flow stands, and always be working on ways to improve your cash flow. If you do not, you could run into all sorts of problems if you suddenly discover that you are out of money. Management by fire fighting doesn't work: This may sound strange, and it doesn't mean that you need to learn how to actually put out fires or anything. What it does mean is that you are doing a whole lot of problem oriented work in a short period of time, just like a fire fighter. This is something that can actually do you a lot more harm than good in the long run. One way to avoid having a lot of extra work is by finding the right customers for your business who only provide positive interactions and experiences. You don't have a Unique Selling Proposition: If you want to get customers to buy from you, you need to be able to offer them something that no one else has. Your need to be unique, and have a USP in place to convince customers that you are the person they want to do business with. Find as many ways that you can to show that what you are offering is unique, and you will find that you have created an excellent brand, and you have a large customer base that is bringing you profits. Basically, you need to stand out from the crowd. You aren't using umbrella marketing strategies: There are so many ways to market your products and service that it just doesn't make any sense to limit your options by only using one or two methods. Use every available method of getting the word out about your business and what you have to offer. Take advantage of online marketing, get in on joint ventures, anything you can do to market your business and see the profits you have been dreaming about.
