Are We Gods?

"We are God," or "the Messiah is us" is the belief many of us hold today. But is this belief correct? Can we, mere mortal beings who can die, be God, who alone is immortal and cannot die?

God, whose personal name is Jehovah, is absolutely holy and perfect and sinless. Jesus our Messiah, the one appointed and anointed by God to be our only Savior, is also absolutely sinless and perfect, because he is the exact image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15).

On the other hand, the Bible specifically said that every human being is a sinner: - "all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23, World English Bible) - There is no one righteous; no, not one. There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not, so much as one." (Romans 3:10-12) - "the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth" (Genesis 8:21)

The prince of Tyre from the Old Testament spoken about in Ezekiel, was a type (resemblance) of Satan. Even though he was a mere mortal being, he thought himself as God. Jehovah said to the prince, "Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said, I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet you are man, and not God, though you set your heart as the heart of God...and your heart is lifted up because of your riches... Because you have set your heart as the heart of God, I will bring strangers on you, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and they shall defile your brightness. They shall bring you down to the pit; and you shall die the death of those who are slain, in the heart of the seas. Will you yet say before him who kills you, I am God? but you are man, and not God, in the hand of him who wounds you." (Ezekiel 28: 2, 5, 6-9, WEB)

So we must ask ourselves the same question: will we yet say we are Jehovah or Jesus Christ when we have sinned (i.e., spoken lies, taken pride of our human strength, etc.)? We dare not, for each one of us is a filthy sinner, far from being the perfect and sinless God or Messiah.

However, we can be made righteous and justified (obtain right standing with God) only when we put faith in Jesus and follow in his footsteps by fulfilling the two greatest commandments: loving God, and loving others as we love ourselves: "Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." (Romans 10:4)

Yet still, the righteousness God grants us will make us Christ-like, not exactly God or Messiah himself, and it is not something we should boast about or be proud of, for this righteousness is given to us by God through His grace (undeserved kindness), not by our own might or works: "by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
