If you are planning on starting a weekly workout plan, or already have one, it might be fun for you to include your dog in the benefits of exercise! Believe it or not, the percentage of obese and over-weight dogs throughout the United States is growing in number. Just as humans need exercise and a nutritional diet to remain healthy and fit, dogs do too. Dogs are wonderful exercise buddies, because they will not take ‘no’ for an answer! Once your routine is established, your dog will encourage you to keep at it.

So, where do you begin to work your pup into your weekly workout? First, consult your local veterinarian, and take your dog in for a physical examination, if necessary. Your vet will able to tell you where to start, and will provide advice on the health state of your dog so that you can cater to their specific exercise needs. Also, be aware that some breeds are more built for walking or running workouts than others. Breeds such as bulldogs or pugs are not prime candidates for such exercise because their respiratory systems are not adequate for the lung labor of exercise.

You should also consider your pet’s age before you begin a walking or running program. If your dog is still a puppy, research has shown that exercise may be more harmful than helpful at a young age because their bones are still growing and the pressure and stress on the growing and building joints could make them weaker instead of stronger. Also, if your pet is getting along in age, a running program may not be the best option. Possibly trying short walks each day would help them be healthier, yet it would be at a pace that corresponds with their age and body type.

First, begin slowly. Just as humans need plenty of time to work up to running 5 miles at a time, so do dogs! Dogs enjoy running, but some need to work up to running longer and faster. So, again, begin slowly. Start by walking, then gradually increase the pace and length as your dog (and maybe yourself as well!) adjusts and is able to handle more of a rigorous exercise plan. Dogs are lovers of routine, and they will enjoy the set exercise schedule, not to mention they see it as a chance for one-on-one time with you!

Incorporating your dog into your weekly workout plan, or even beginning a new workout plan with your dog will help you stay on schedule and on track, and it will also make your exercise time more enjoyable, interesting, and rewarding. Everyone likes spending time with their friends, and what better candidate for working out with than your best friend? They will give you company, and they will hold to your routine. What more could you ask for in an exercise buddy?
