Emergency Preparedness and Home Organization Plans
Written by Maya Willis
Although you might ordinarily think of home organization plans as simply a way to clear up clutter and increase personal efficiency, sometimes there is a safety aspect to consider. There are many different kinds of emergencies that can occur in a home, many of which you may have no control over. By having a good home organization plan that takes emergency preparedness into consideration, you and your family will be ready for anything. Although it's never pleasant to think about tragedy and natural disasters, taking the time to plan things out in advance could mean the difference between life and death.
Conduct a Home Inventory
Sometimes it might seem as though your family isn't ready for even the smallest of emergencies. Think back to the last time the electricity went out. Did you have a flashlight handy? Were there actually fresh batteries in the flashlight? If you answered "no" to either of these questions, it's time to get better organized. Take a survey of your home's existing emergency equipment. Make a list of your flashlights, fire extinguishers, first aid medical kits, and other items that could come in handy during emergency situations. You should also pay attention as to whether you have basic supplies such as bottled water and food that could be easily opened and prepared, even if you don't have any electricity or heat. If you notice any missing items during your inventory or if you find you are running low on supplies, make a list of the items you need. Then, take a trip to the store to replenish your emergency supplies.
Devise a Plan
Once you have restocked your home with emergency supplies and made sure that you have everything you need, it's important to develop a workable emergency plan. Think about the safest areas of your home for every kind of emergency, such as the most structurally sound area of your home in the case of a tornado. Be sure to stock these safe areas with the appropriate emergency supplies. If you find that you need separate "safe areas" for different kinds of emergencies, you might need to purchase duplicate supplies so that you can be prepared in all locations. Walk around your home while making note of what you might do if you were in the room when an emergency occurred. For example, if you were in the basement and a fire was blocking the steps leading upstairs, do you have an emergency exit? If not, perhaps you need to look into an egress door, designed to be fit into one of your basement windows.
Educate Your Family
Once you've developed some workable emergency plans, it's time to educate the rest of your family members. Call a family meeting to discuss what everyone should do in the case of an emergency. It can also be helpful to conduct a few emergency drills, allowing everyone to actually put the plan into action. If everyone knows exactly what to do in the case of an emergency, there will be less of a tendency to panic. By being prepared, your family will react calmly and safely in the face of an emergency situation.
