Getting Your Pantry Organized for Dieting
Written by Maya Willis
If you need to lose weight or just want to live a healthier lifestyle, making a commitment to eating healthier can be a great way to start. Although it can sometimes be a bit of a challenge to stick to healthier eating habits, organizing your pantry can definitely help. If your pantry is like most, there's a good chance it may currently be filled with food items that aren't exactly "diet friendly." By removing these food items prior to dieting, you'll be much more likely to succeed. Here are some tips you can use to get your pantry ready to support your dieting efforts.
Getting Started
Although you might think that "out of sight is out of mind," this old adage doesn't exactly apply to the food in your pantry. In fact, the mere thought of sugary treats in your pantry might be enough to derail even your most dedicated dieting efforts. Instead of trying to muster the willpower to resist foods unhealthy foods, it's best to simply remove them from your pantry before starting your diet.
Cleaning, organizing and purging are the first three steps towards creating a healthier pantry. Start by removing everything from your pantry and cabinets. After you've cleaned the shelves, it's time to carefully assess your current food supply. Read the labels carefully. If you find food items that are high in sugar, fat or calories, set them aside. Healthy food choices can eventually go back into the pantry. However, any food items that don't fit into your new diet plan should be donated to your local food bank or other charity. Of course, you should simply discard any food items that are outdated, stale or otherwise unsuitable for consumption.
Creating Groups
Once you're down to only the "diet-friendly" food items, you should devise an organizational strategy before returning them to the pantry. Organizing food items into basic groups can work well. For example, you may want to group your canola oil, olive oil and vegetable oil together. For easy access, store your spices in one cabinet or on one shelf. Boxes of cereal, canned soup and canned vegetables are food items that can benefit from being stored in groups. In order to save space and help keep food items fresh, you might also want to transfer your staples such as flour and sugar to airtight containers. Once your food items are stored in logical groupings, you'll undoubtedly find that it will be much easier to locate them when needed.
Pantry Organizers
Even if you have plenty of cabinet and pantry space in your kitchen, you might find it difficult to use the space efficiently. In many cases, shelves, cabinets and drawers can be too tall or too wide in order to make the best use of the space. This can be especially true in the case of older cabinetry. If this is the case in your pantry, specialized organizers can help. For example, a wire bin designed to be suspended from a shelf could help you better utilize the space. You'll find these organizers readily available in a wide variety of sizes, styles and price points. As such, it should be a relatively simple task to find just the ones you need in order to solve your particular storage challenges.
