How College Can Fuel Addiction
Written by Kitt Wakeley
If you’re a new college student, you are exposed not only to a higher level of education, but a newfound freedom and independence. You will get the opportunity to meet various people and learn about different cultures due to the wide array of ethnic groups on many college campuses. However, there can also be a darker side to attending college. There are actually a few ways that college can fuel addiction.
How College Can Fuel Addiction
Access
First, there is the factor of easy access. In this day and age, technology has made it very easy to locate and communicate with your peers, both on and off campus. And, at this time of independence, some of the students attending college will sometimes start selling various substances in order to pay for their tuition, other school-related expenses, or to have extra spending money in their pockets. They then tend to look for other college students to sell those substances to.
Peer Pressure
This next factor is not limited to colleges. It’s something that we normally underestimate, and it’s called peer pressure. You can be lured into this web, especially if you are not a very strong-willed individual. Many people feel the need to fit in with a group and become “socially accepted.” This can cause people to make bad judgement calls, which, in turn, can lead to individuals experimenting with potentially harmful substances. Use of these substances can help create and fuel an addiction.
Stress
Stress is one of the most well-known reasons why a lot of people try and become addicted to certain substances. College students face tons of different challenges throughout their daily life, and some are not capable of managing stress as well as others. Substance use can provide a temporary “escape” from their feelings of overwhelming stress. What may start out as a weekend thing, can then turn into more frequent use, and eventually become a full-fledged addiction. The individual will eventually require more of the substance to feed their craving, which only increases and further fuels the addiction.
Curiosity
Last but not least, there’s another component called curiosity. It is natural for all people to be curious, but in this particular case, too much of it does way more harm than good. College students can allow their curiosity to get the better of them, which can lead to experimentation with illicit substances. Maybe they have seen or heard about the “buzz” or the “high” that these substances are said to provide. They choose to give it a try, which subsequently ends up leading to a new addiction or boosting an already existing one.
There are many factors that can encourage and/or fuel an addiction, and college can be one of those factors. If you’re a college student who is struggling with an addiction, or you know someone who is, there is help available for addictions of all kinds at addiction treatment centers, like Vizown Advanced Residential Treatment and Recovery Center for Women in OK. It is also absolutely necessary to seek addiction treatment immediately, for you or a college student.
