Life on Purpose: What Do I Want Right Now?

Who wants to live your life on purpose? C’mon, raise your hands! Don’t be shy! None of us want to reflect back and the end of our lives and feel like we meandered and had little effect on anyone or anything. But in order to have an effect, you must be intentional.

Now, I know you’re probably sick to death of hearing about goals, goals, goals! Well, to be honest, I am too! Goals are great, but there’s a whole lot involved in making them a reality. Oftentimes, it’s real easy to get overly focused on creating them and then we never get around to the doing.

Today, I want to take a little different spin on this subject. Having life goals are great because they point you in the right direction, but I want to help you focus on just the here and now of living your life on purpose. It’s just a simple little question…. What do I want right now? Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not once the kids are grown. Right now.

Why is this important when it comes to living life on purpose? Because it keeps you anchored in the present.

Focusing on our past can lead to regret. We kick ourselves for the poor choices, the ignorance or naiveté. Yes, we can (and should) learn from our past, but it’s not something we have control over. What’s done is done and focusing on “shouldas” and “couldas” doesn’t help us now.

Focusing on the future can lead to anxiety. Matthew 6:34 tells us: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Let’s be honest, we both know there are too many variables to consider. Plus, none of us have ANY idea as to the curveballs that may be thrown our way. All excessive future thinking does is cause us to miss out on the beauty of what we have going on now.

Today – right now – is the gift you are holding in your precious hand. What are you going to do with it? Are you going to open it and use it to the best of your ability? It’s where you have control over making decisions that will affect change. It’s where you can have the biggest impact in your life and the lives of those around you. It’s where living your life on purpose really takes place. So, take a second and ask yourself, “What do I want right now?” and post your ideas below.
