Self Control - What Is It Exactly?

We hear about the importance of self control all the time. I don't know about you, but I usually have visions of grey clothes, and a boring life whenever I hear the words self control!! I made the decision to do a little investigating on this topic for find out what's so great about Self Control.

I found out that self control allows me to...

1. Become more gentle with those around me. I'm able to be empathetic to the people I'm talking about because I'm focusing on them rather than me, me, me.

2. Relate to others in a way that is positive and uplifting, rather than destructive. I'll think before I act rather than just blurting out the first thing that pops into my head.

3. Have better judgment because I am not ruled by my emotions. I can understand my emotional triggers and know healthy ways of managing difficult emotions.

4. Grant forgiveness instead of retaliate against someone who has hurt me. Our natural inclination is to lash out whenever we feel slighted. Self control allows me to think through the consequences of that and choose to forgive.

5. Strive to be courteous to all I come in contact with. I can slow down and think through what the best response to a situation is.

6. Be clearer in my thinking. Being ruled by emotions, doesn't allow for very rational thinking or acting for that matter! By having the emotions under control, I can use better judgment in deciding how to proceed with a situation.

7. Willing to let God be God and not try to take His place. I don't need to jump in and be in control of everything. I can trust that God has my best interests in mind and is big enough to take care of my needs.

One thing that's apparent is that self control requires action. It's definitely NOT a passive thing that just happens. It requires making in a priority and being intentional. Here's a very practical verse to put somewhere you'll see it to help you with having a little more self control in your life.

Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help. Psalm 34:12-15
