Do you ever wonder why some women just don’t age? We’ve all thought, “How does she do that?” To make matters worse, many of those same women never struggle with menopause symptoms. There is a connection. Our hormones play a major role in how fast we age and how good we look. When hormones are in balance, we look and feel great.

Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can slow down the aging process and support hormone balance. Antioxidants protect us by fighting off free radicals which can break down our body tissues. An example of this is the break down of collagen and elastin fibers, that leads to loss of skin elasticity and wrinkles. Free radicals are like rust spreading over your car. The more free radicals there are, the more damage they will do.

In addition, everyday our body turns over cells replacing the old with the new. And in today’s society of long work hours, stressful deadlines, and lack of sleep, the body is robbed of time needed to regenerate the “new you.” If not given the proper nutrition, your body cannot perform this rejuvenation function very well and that leads to accelerated aging.

Food is the fuel needed to regenerate the body. When you consume high calorie food with little nutritional value, you’re not supporting your hormones or longevity. Point blank… “you look and feel as good as you eat.” Nutrients in our food such as proteins, cholesterol, and essential fatty acids are essential in maintaining hormonal balance but more importantly, having them in proper ratio is key.

While positive food changes can aid in balancing hormones, some women need additional help. As a holistic nutritionist, I analyze diet records for nutrient deficiencies, test hormone levels and then support the body’s own ability to restore balance through nutritional therapy.
