THE NEW BOOK ‘STIRLING’

"The important thing is not to win, but to take part.
The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle.
The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."

*

THE WILL TO WIN

"To drive fearlessly to win is to win another race - the race against fear - (trophies themselves are but symbols to delight old age);
To challenge your fellow man in peaceful pursuitr
Of courage is the epitome of courage;
To lose the race with grace is the embodiment of grace itself.
To triumph is to achieve gloryr
But glory is empty without the overthrow of fear, the acquisition
Of courage, of grace -
For the possession of these is the true glory.
Good breeding is displayed in the ability to lose wellr
And is primarily engendered by respect:
Respect is created by the acknowledgement not of the other man's shortcomings or faultsr
But essentially the acknowledgement of his virtues -
For without virtuer
What is man - be he on the track challenging the fates,
Or on a bed of sleep?

Easy-going NARRATIVE, which weaves, dodges and dives.

THE PLOT:
Racing driver in a deep coma (Stirling)
* quest trying to find the unknown author (Stirling’s favourite), because the father is convinced that if he can bring the author (and the son’s dog) to his comatose son’s bedside, a miracle will occur. Sets out to find the one person he believes will be able to help his son come out of his coma and get better.
“Fiction, Faction”, or perhaps even a true story!!!!

There are various threads in the story:
* a highly intelligent and creative family, and a free-spirited and loving mother, a son and a daughter with vivid imaginations.
* the “driven”father (who was actively involved in WW II) was much later in life inspired by the unknown author’s anti-war stance and inspirational and empowering writings.
* a few thoughts on the mental health professionrn(“we don’t know what more we can do for you, so take a pill and disappear”??) Only joking, there are many good, caring people around in that area!!!
The main point is that we already have it WITHIN ourselves to get out of very sticky situations in life. All people occasionally need is support and simple encouragement.

* Essentially stories of love: father – son and son – father
son – father – mother – sister- brotherrn…and all of them for an unknown writer/author, “ a champion of hope“rnIn short, it’s a story about hope, love and PEACE, plain and simple! *
FOR MY BELOVED SONS, SEAN and GARETH

Watching children grow
is like threatening the ivy
to climb the garden wall.
You wait for it to happen
you hurry it along with love.
But still you’re disappointed
at giving someone life enough
to walk off on their own
and not be carried in your arms.
You never turn back – not once,
and yet one day they’ve grown apart
or tallerr
It’s all the same.
Polly put the kettle on, we’ll all have tea.
Giving love to children
has made us older ove
ight.

NOW LET’S WRITE THE STORY!

Started jan 14th Jan in the year 2011

"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." — Robert F. Kennedy

PRPLOGUE

It was one sunny April day in the "swingin" sixties. The large crowd at Goodwood race-track on that Easter weekend saw the racing car seemingly inexplicably veer out of control and come to a sudden stop... the abrupt sound of the impact ringing in the ears of the spectators at the corner. For a brief moment there was an eery silence, before the roar of the engines of approaching racing cars shattered the quiet. Track marshalls ran to their posts shouting out instructions, waving their flags frantically, warning of danger ahead to the speeding cars. Then soon afterwards, with cars roaring past the scene, the marshalls starting waving their red flags to the cars racing past, signalling that the race had been stopped.

In the stillness, surrounded by helpers battling to extricate him from the wrecked car, the unconscious driver, still holding the bent steering wheel was totally unaware of all the feverish and very conce
ed activity going on all around him.

And no one knew what new paths in life lay ahead...
