The Story of Tapping into God: Experiencing the Spiritual Spectrum by Debbie Belmessieri

It’s Like a Short Course on Spiritual Diversity

Tapping into God, what an intriguing title! Inside the covers of this book that’s just what you’ll find – 28 captivating articles written by followers of religious traditions, spiritual practices and divine philosophies. It’s an amazing array of mystical information, some of which the reader may have little or no knowledge, such as traditions of the Druids and other spiritual practices that are not widely known. This book gives the reader the opportunity to learn more about each of those traditions. It’s like a short course on spiritual diversity!
In scanning the table of contents the reader can find articles as varied as those focused on the teachings in the Old Testament, the Bible, the Qur’an, or the spiritual practices of A Course in Miracles and the Big Book of the Twelve Step Program. The authors are knowledgeable, devote practitioners in the religious or spiritual traditions they discuss in their articles. Their dedication is palpable, and their devotion is refreshing.
The inspiration for this book came to Debbie one morning in December, 2008 as she was taking a shower, and was downloaded to her, so to speak, in its entirety. She knew in that instant the title, purpose, and format she would use, and went on to implement her insight within the next week. This project was a call to discover what connection to God looks like in the many ways humans worship and express devotion. She also knew that the purpose of this book was twofold: one was to show the threads of commonality among many practices and religions in order to foster respect and understanding, and the other was to provide a smorgasbord of diverse information for those seeking spiritual connection.
Over the course of the next two and a half years, Debbie was led on a wondrous journey, meeting many people, both clergy and practitioners, of various belief systems. Many groups she had never heard of, and some posed a challenge to her own beliefs and biases. But throughout this journey, Debbie was always pleased to see the same joy and passion in each person who stepped up to take on the task of describing the God of their understanding and how their beliefs showed up in their lives. As one person led to another, the list grew longer and longer and grew into the volume that became Tapping into God.
Spirituality is an area that gets special attention during “trying times” such as these in which we now live. For some, looking at spirituality will include a return to the religious roots of their childhood, delving deeper and in more satisfying ways. However, for others it may lead them to explore a new-found path into spiritual territory, thereby developing a deeper and more satisfying spiritual life than they had previously experienced. For those hungering for a greater understanding of a full range of spiritual practices, Tapping into God provides a unique and often very personal look at many faiths and spiritual practices.

What is unique about this book is the personal nature of many of these stories. Most of the authors describe how they came to choose the religion or practice that now guides them, and others relate how the religion of their upbringing still nurtures them today. No matter the faith itself, reading these stories will nurture your spirit, and even the non-believe
will find refreshing and thought provoking ideas within these pages.
Readers can tap into God by reading cover-to-cover, or by just selecting at random from the wide array of articles. Overall, this book clearly speaks to the fact that most of the world’s different faiths and spiritual traditions aren’t all that different. If our human family gained just that awareness, there exists the possibility of a new paradigm of harmony and global understanding and a true appreciation and respect for diversity. While many books provide information focused on specific spiritual traditions, Debbie Belmessieri, presents an overview of many spiritual paths and a much broader picture of the spiritual spectrum, demonstrating that there are many ways of tapping into God.
