A few months ago my good friend Dale Kurow came on my radio show to talk about “Positioning Yourself for a Promotion”. We discussed specific steps people can take to position themselves to get noticed for a promotion. To lay the groundwork for a promotion, she talked about the importance of documenting past successes. That means keeping a record of every major accomplishment (big and small), awards, and any new ideas that are proposed and adopted. Dale calls this tool, “a hero file.”

Why bother?

Here are a few reasons:

  • When performance reviews roll around you’ll have an impressive list of successes that highlight your value to the company. This gives you ammunition to ask for a raise, more responsibility or a promotion.
  • When updating your resume, you’ll have concrete evidence to back-up your information.

• Need some inspiration and motivation? Pull out your hero file for a boost. If you’ve been following my newsletters, you know I talk a lot about creating a list of past successes to build confidence, support motivation, and challenge negative self-talk. Documenting past successes will give you fuel to maintain a positive outlook because it based on your personal history.
Whether you work within a corporation or have your own business, creating a hero file can be a great resource to add to your toolbox!

Your call to action!

Start your hero file today. Add thank you notes you’ve received, rave reviews, positive emails… what else can you think of??? Keep it handy and review often!
