When is it time to pursue your dreams and start working for yourself full-time?

This is a hard question because for so many of us entrepreneurs, we each have our own goals and ways of achieving them at different rates and time. On top of that, not all fields of entrepreneurship are the same, which means it may take one individual 1 year to jump ship, or maybe 3 years. The bottom line is and always will come down to one thing. Cash Flow.

Cash Flow: Knowing how much money you will bring in on your own is the most essential part of working for yourself. Being able to ride out the slow months is also extremely essential, as many start-ups realize that business may not always be booming every day of each month. Preparing for those slow times by budgeting correctly will ensure that you and your business have longevity in the competitive nature of your industry.

Years ago, going to work for yourself was like jumping into a river with no life preserver and no land in sight to hold onto. Not much has changed in the way of measuring risk, but like the old saying goes, "with great risk comes great reward." Some may call this old saying cliche, but it really speaks a lot of truth. The risk takers, the different ones, are the individuals who have created a unique world for their own. Without the wisdom and courage of pursuing their passions on their own, they wouldn't be who they are today.

So when is the best time to jump ship and make your own success?

The answer is never. There will never be the "best time" or realistic measures. It will always be a huge risk to gamble, but a huge gain to strive for. Having enough financial cushion to get you through 1 full year of no work would be what I recommend as a security blanket. If those slow months do arrive, you'll know that you have enough padding to stay afloat. Another good idea before jumping ship is formulating a new business plan. You may have already been working on your own business on the side, but once you go full time, it's an entirely different strategy. Make sure to map out a plan for the journey ahead.

All in all, being your own boss takes extreme discipline, courage, a huge leap of faith, hard work and maybe a smudge of good luck. In the end, you'll only find out your greatest potential by just taking the risk and jumping in!
