How and where do I begin?
“If you don’t break your ropes while you’re alive, do you think ghosts will do it after? (Kabir) There is no perfect time, or state of mind, begin wherever you find yourself, now! The first step will uncover whatever courage you need to continue. Taking one step is never just one step, although it is the hardest and a most important one. The first step has the power to change you, thus change your life. You are only 3 Rules away from creating an incredible life! At Last! 3 Rules to break in order to find your true happiness! You want more in your life; you want to be happier, and you want some answers. If you are feeling stuck in any area of your life, this is the right place. Here are the three foundational rules that have to be broken, if we are going to become free enough to have a life of abundance. There is something in these rules that trips all of us at some time if we are not aware, and willing to do something about them. “Is the Life you are living the Life that wants to live in you?” (Parker Palmer) Rule # 1: Rebel against other People’s Second Hand Rules. Rule # 2: Go Beyond the “American Dream.” Rule # 3: Stop Trying to “Fit In.” Do you notice when somebody ignores what is in their best interest, in order to keep the peace? Do you see a pattern when another puts creativity on the back burner, to keep from aggravating a partner’s insecurity? Is that someone you? Do you have a blind spot when it comes to yourself? Are you willing to betray others to be true to yourself? Do you realize some of the beliefs and rules that you live by are not yours? Whose “second hand” rules are you living by? I have broken these 3 rules and I shudder to think of what my life would be like today, if I had not risked breaking them. The 1st rule I ask you to break is to rebel; to rebel for - not against. Of course the first part of rebelling is really against, as we have to be against something, to go and grow towards. Go towards; after we rebel against. I am asking you to rebel against other people’s ‘shoulds’, second hand rules; beliefs, and ways of conditioning passed down as if it were the ‘right’ way, from family, schools, churches, and community. To have a full happy life you have to be willing to examine and to let go of other people’s rules that no longer serve you if they ever did. Sometimes not knowing ourselves, we subject ourselves to live by other people’s ideas, conditions, and rules, as we repeat our struggles and wonder why? Are you at a point in your life where you wonder is this all there is? Do you ask yourself or doubt that you can be happier? Do you think you are as happy as you are going to be? Do you find yourself repeating patterns and relationships that cause pain and struggle? Do you find yourself lonely or isolating? Are you someone who works hard but never quite gets ahead? Do you stay in relationships that are toxic because you believe in a rule that says ‘you made your bed now lie in it’? Do you think abundance is for others but not for you? If you answer yes to any of the above questions, then you’re at the right place. Recently, a client told me that he liked a certain political candidate. “So! You know who you are going to vote for?” His reply startled me: “I said I liked him, but when it’s time to vote, I’ll probably do as I always do, vote with the rest. In our union we are generally pressured to vote as a block.” Wow! This man is unhappy, somewhat depressed, bored in life, and continues to wonder why? Will he risk breaking just 1 rule, take the first step, the most important step, to free up from patterns that sabotage his happiness? Some pressures and rules are more subtle than mentioned above. At least the union worker was aware of what was asked of him and he had a choice. Often the rules and beliefs that cause problems in life were downloaded into us when we were children, and we don’t know what is there until we decide to find out. Being covert, they are often more dangerous, with power to harm, to prevent or steal happiness and joy. If it blocks my freedom and my growth, am I willing to be true to myself? When does it become the life that you want? Will you risk finding out? ***Autumn Leaves
Life if full of transitions and as this one goes; summer into autumn may not be a highly dramatic Neiman Marcus moment. It may be a more practical down to earth restocking of our shelves and inner selves. What is important here is the attitude you bring to the restocking. If you do it mindfully this seasonal transition provides an opportunity to live life in a more meaningful way with eyes wide open. If we are not mindful summer can merge into autumn finding us picking up the pace of school, games, hunting, parties etc in an automatic headless, unfulfilling way.
