3 Steps To Finding Your Joy
Written by Kim Markison
Joseph Campbell said it all when he advised humanity to, "follow your bliss." Those three words are the best words ever spoken. If you choose what makes YOU happy and joyful, you not only please yourself but you increase the happiness and joy in the world. With all the stress of our modern life, what a beautiful idea finding your joy is. So how do you do it? How do we find your joy? Start by remembering, smoothly transition into selecting, and finish with creating your own powerful roadmap.
First, remember a situation where you completely lost track of time. Remember several of them. What were you doing in each situation? What had your attention so rapt that you lost track of time? On a piece of paper, write down the things you were doing, along with other things you love doing—anything that brings you joy. Now look at all those activities and ask yourself what it is that they give you. How do they make you feel? Some possibilities would be freedom, connection, aliveness, or maybe even bliss. Now think of other things that might give you this same feeling (or feelings); things you may not have ever tried.
Now for the second step, of all the things you wrote down, circle the ones that stand out to you. Select only those things or feelings that most resonate with you right now. Notice the connection of those selections. What do they have in common? What emerges on your paper is a rough blueprint of who you are in this moment. You are a magnificent and ingenious being who is on the leading edge of creation for the pure joy and expansion of it all. You cannot get it wrong. Whatever picture you see, let’s now craft it and bring it into clearer focus.
The third and final step is to pull out a fresh sheet of paper. Of all the things you circled, list the activities that resonate most with you on the left side of the paper. On the right side, list the feeling or feelings you circled. The list on the right side is the goal. Whenever you have a choice to make, ask yourself if that choice will invoke any of the feelings that you listed. If the answer is weak, or you’re not sure, or it’s a “no,” then you might want to look in another direction. Unless the answer is a resounding "YES!", then look for another choice.
The only way to “follow your bliss” is to know what your bliss is. Luckily, humanity comes equipped with a built in radar system for detecting which direction to look for it. The list of feelings you now have is the key to finding your joy. Keep heading in their direction and you will find all that you are seeking.
