Sales are not the easiest thing in the world to do, and the idea of going out for sales is a terrifying one for many entrepreneurs. The fear of rejection can really be overpowering for some people, but it is also something that you just have to get over if you want to be successful. Sure you are going to have rejection. Everyone does. But you are also going to have a lot of positive reactions too, and this is what will keep you going. To be successful in sales, you need to know how to sell, and you need to have certain skills. You need to be in the right frame of mind, be committed, and have many other traits. If you really want to be successful in sales, here are five excellent tips:
Have the right mindset: If you are not in the right frame of mind and have a positive attitude, you may just as well give up before you even start. Be prepared for rejection, and be ready to be able to handle it. It happens, and it just has to be expected. But, also be prepared for success. In fact, expect success. You need to be positive, and when you have a positive attitude, it is going to reflect on your customers, and they will be more positive. You also need to be motivated, and really want to get out there and get those customers, especially the customers who are going to be best for your business.
Meet as many people as possible: It only makes sense that the more contacts you make, the higher your sales and profits are going to ultimately be. A lot of small business owners get frustrated with the level of their sales, and the reason they don't have enough sales is because they do not get out there enough to get more customers. This is a never-ending battle, and one that must be fought daily. You need to get out there and meet as many people as possible in order to be able to get those contacts you need. Figure out your conversion rate, which is how many people you meet compared to how many actually buy, you will know how many contacts you need to make every day.
Always work on follow-up: The sale doesn't end once a purchase is made. You need to always be there for your customers, long after the sale has been completed. Customer support will take you a long way in the business world, and follow-up is a great way to show that you provide great customer support. Contact customers and see how they are doing with their purchase, and if there is anything else you can do for them. This is something that you need to do each and every day.
Be unbiased, and put your customers' needs before your own: The best way to gain the trust of potential customers is to make sure that you are working for them and not just for yourself. Do everything you can to make sure that their needs are met. If you can not do this, recommend that they go to your competition. This may cost you a sale in the beginning, but they are going to remember you as someone who is not afraid of a little bit of competition, and not just looking to make a fast buck.
The sale is never over: This basically goes back to following up. Yes, once you sell your product or service, your sale is technically complete. But, if you want to maintain a relationship with your customers and make sure that they are going to do business with you again in the future, you need to make sure that you are continually following up with them. Call a day or two after the sale to see how they are doing. Offer more information about what they purchased from you. Do whatever it takes to retain your customers for life.
Sales may be difficult, but it is definitely not an impossible job. You just need to have the right mindset, get out there and make contacts, make your sales, and always follow up. If you follow this simple formula, you are pretty much guaranteed success for your small business.
