Every year, there are all kinds of new businesses being started. Unfortunately, a lot of these businesses will close during the first year of operation. This is the most critical time for any new business, and there are all kinds of things that need to be done to ensure that the new business is successful. There are five great steps you can take when you are starting your business to ensure that you will be celebrating your first and many more anniversaries of being in business for yourself: Learn who your target audience is. You need to make sure that you are marketing to the right audience. For example, if you are selling cat food, you are not going to target dog lovers. Look at the product or service you are selling, and study the market, learning who uses this product or service. This is a great way to stay focused on the big picture. Bootstrapping may be necessary: It takes money to start a business, and even with loans, many people still often do not have enough capital to get started and keep going, at least for a few months until sales and profits start coming in. You may even have to take on another job in the beginning in order to raise the capital that you need to get your business idea off the ground. Also, when you raise your own capital, you don't have to answer to creditors, and you are not taking nearly as much of a financial risk. Create an excellent marketing plan: It is important for every business to have a great marketing plan to work with. You need to always be marketing your business in order to achieve the sales and profits that you want, and when you have a plan in place, the work will be a whole lot easier. Learn who you want to market to, decide how much you want to spend on marketing, decide on the types of marketing you want to use, etc. Just do whatever it takes to let people know that you are open for business. It is important to pre-sell: Not everyone bothers to do this, but it is a habit that every new business owner should get into. While you are setting up your business, in fact, even before, start seeking out customers. Then, once you are ready to open your business, you will have already started to build a customer base which will give you a great foundation to work from. For example, you can launch your website before you open your business, which will create a sense of anticipation for potential customers who visit the website again and again until you actually are open. Take care of legal stuff before you open for business: You are going to have enough to think about once you have your business up and running and the last thing you will want to have to deal with are legal issues. Get all of this taken care of before you are ready to open. This way, you will be able to concentrate on the more important things, like making your business grow into one that is very successful.
