5 Steps to Achieving Your Goals … Faster!

I was reading the Tortoise and the Hare the other day and it got me thinking about goal setting…
When trying to reach the finish line…
Is it better to go fast?
Or slow?
And what I came up with was that in order to Go fast… we need to at times start off slow, by putting in thinking time, setting up systems, and many times teaching skills to others so that we can focus on the Vroom Vroom…
5 Steps to Faster Goal achievement… aka: the finish line!!
1. Learn how to prioritize and focus on the BEST opportunities available.
Let’s face it, not all opportunities are created equal are they? As opportunities pop up all around you (and they do!!) put them through your own criteria test. Ask yourself questions like: “does this opportunity bring me closer or further from my Big goals?” . If the answer is further, don’t be afraid to say, “No thank you… not at this time.”
2. Learn to improve work habits.
I would be lying if I said I always performed at my maximum capacity. I was always focused. And always productive… I won’t lie. I like you, fall into the same traps that prevent you from being as productive as you like… that being said, I still manage to complete a lot of tasks that continue to pull me closer to achieving what I set out to do, but only by being accountable to myself for my work habits. Assess yourself with a disce
ing eye. Take note of areas that you can improve upon. Then learn how to change.
3. Continue to learn and grow professionally.
Increasing your personal knowledge not only makes you more successful in business, but also in life. The best way to add value to your clients is by always learning new things that you in turn can share and teach them. Whether it’s a new process on social media or how to make a better to do list. The best investment you could ever make, is that of yourself. Make it a plan to attend a seminar or take a course every quarter, so that you can hone your skills and make yourself more “knowledge” valuable to those around you.
4. Accept that you can’t do it alone.
I recently had a conversation with a woman whom I was mentoring. She is setting up a new business in the concierge industry. One of the questions she asked me was “what would you have done differently”? I quickly responded to her that as a business owner, a college graduate and a pretty smart chic I swore I could do everything on my own. I could teach myself and learn everything I needed on my own… because heck. I am a smart chic! People would mentor me and say “Kelly, look you can’t do it all alone”…. I would snark inside my own head and think, “They don’t know who they’re talking to… I’m Kelly and I can do anything!”. BINGO! Not so smart after all… All I did was delay my outcomes! Now that I live by that advise, I never feel alone.
5. Work in your personal zone of genius.
Ok. I can’t help myself here: Do you Remember: “Mr Rolling cooler cooler roller guy”? Real Men of Genius? ( I double dog dare you to click the link!!)
By focusing on work that you are uniquely gifted to do… You achieve more, much faster and usually have fun doing it. Stop forcing yourself to do things you do not like to do, or don’t know how to do. Instead delegate that work to someone who that task IS their zone of genius. For example, if you are naturally gifted at writing and enjoy it…do THAT! And the idea of formatting your blog or ezine isn’t…then DON”T do that! The more you work in your personal zone the faster you can reach your goals partly because you’ll have less things to sidetrack you and slow down your progression.
I’m a firm believe
that you can’t change all your habits at once, but if you focus on just one of these steps and maintain consistency you will see a faster progression towards the finish line…
So… Try to see what it’s like to start out slower, put things in place, stay focused like the tortoise… Then once you have all those great strategies in place… Time to switch into Hare mode and have at it… Vroom!
