When we go to beauty salons we expect professionalism, cleanliness and hygiene above all other things. A self-trained, homemade beautician can hardly satisfy these needs especially the first criterion while most people would at least adhere to basics of cleanliness and hygiene.

The success of beauty salons depends on various key issues. To begin with you need to dress for success. Would you like to go to someone who herself is in need of new hair-do or make-up. So as cheesy as it sounds you do need to dress for success. Dressing up every day may seem a bit tiring but remember you are your own brand, your clients look up to you for inspiration. You do want your product to look great and be consistent, so do your loyal clients.

Keep your station or cabin clean and organized. Not only does it look professional, you can also avoid being embarrassed when the client walks in and your station and drawers look like a bomb had just exploded there. Also add some personal touches to your area (not photographs and the sort) may be flowers and things like that

Beauty salons are a place where the beautician and the clients have a lot of casual talk. It isn’t uncommon for people to open up and speak about various things. Getting intimate and sharing is good enough as far as you don’t cross certain borders. Avoid speaking personal problems or discussing on issues like sex, politics, religion, race etc. You never know when things will simply get out of hand.

A major problem today in salons is answering calls on mobile or texting, avoid doing such costly mistakes. Keep your phone on silent mode and take a call only if it is an emergency; and as quick as you may be in typing no texting whatsoever. First of all clients will get impatient when you keep answering every call and secondly it displays your unprofessionalism.

A good beautician is one who listens closely to the clients especially when they are telling what exactly they want done. If they want to cut one inch, cut only one. You may feel that the particular hairstyle does not suit your client’s face, if so try putting it subtly. Don’t enforce it on them that you are the expert and you know better. It is their face and their hair; they have the freedom to do what they like with it.

And finally let the back room talks stay right there. The salon’s back room is a rather notorious place with a lot of hollering and hooting happening there. Avoid spilling it to the salon floor. It looks extremely unprofessional when co-workers continue their argument on the salon floor.
