One of the most underrated trek destinations in India is the state of Maharashtra. There are hundreds of peaks in Maharashtra many avid trekkers and explorers conquer. In the month of September, exactly when the monsoon season comes to an end, the greenery will flourish in the hill sides making it the perfect time to go on as many treks as one can to experience true pastoral beauty. The temperatures peak to unbearable heights in Maharashtra during the summers. Hill sides are more dry than green and trekking during this season can be a real endurance challenger. Anytime you go for a trek regardless of the season, you should always carry a small back-pack, a water bottle, extra clothes, energy snacks and tough trekking shoes. One must also remember that even though it may be tempting, it is extremely dangerous to go trekking during the monsoon season due to the high chance of storms or heavy rains. Stones are slippery and vision unclear. Unfavourable circumstances may lead to fatal accidents. When the rains calm down, however, the most beautiful sceneries emerge. Among several trekking routes in this state, here are 3 that are most popular and challenging: 1.Kalsubai Trek At 1646 meters in altitude, kalsubai trek is the highest in Maharashtra. Bari village is the base camp of this 1 (or 2) day trek. By car, from Mumbai, it takes three hours to reach the base camp. The closest rail station is the Kasara station, from where you will have to take a cab or bus to the base camp (1 hour away). The trek itself is 3 hours one way. Kalsubai isn’t the easiest trek. Trekkers usually start trekking at 3 to reach by 6 and view the sunset. You can camp once for the night and wake up for the sun rise. 2.Matheran Trek Matheran is about 800 meters in altitude. The base camp for this trek is Bhivpuri. The whole trek takes approximately takes 7 hours. If you start from Mumbai, you will reach the base camp within 2 hours. Neral Junction is the closest railway station to the trek trail. The trek is moderately difficult and is considered one of the most beautiful post-monsoon trek. You can go ahead with Online Bus Ticket Booking to reach the base camp for your ease, but keep the trek schedule in mind. 3.Peb Vikatgad Trek The altitude of peak is 640 meters, and on top is a very old temple of Goddess ‘Pebi’. From Mumbai, a car drive to the base camp takes 1.5 hours approximately. The closest railway station to the base point is Neral station. The trek time is 3 hours and the journey is moderately difficult. This trek too offers few of the most vivid monsoon views. The temple within its surroundings make it look majestic and creates amazing photography opportunities. Many people venture on these quick treks even during monsoon, which is risky regardless of any precautions taken. Right after monsoon, the landscapes are still lush green and the terrains dry and safe. It is important to do research before you go too. You will find many trip planners who organize the whole trek from start to end; you also have a big group then. If you are a Mumbaikar, trek after this monsoon and escape the city’s hassle into the arms of nature and adventure.
