About Potential

We are capable of achieving a lot more than we were told we are capable of achieving. By comparing what we have achieved in the past and telling ourselves that that is all we are capable of achieving in the future, we are limiting our own potential, never finding out what we are really capable of. The past does not equal the future, unless you allow it to.
Potential is not prescribed, it is self-imposed. If you have decided on what you are capable of, then that is what you will be capable of. Nothing more. If you allowed someone else to determine your ability then that will be true for you also.
It is time to decide, for yourself, where your boundaries are. Even better…it is time you decide for yourself what you want your boundaries to be. And don’t be sheepish about it. The wider your “field of dreams” (Yes, stole that from one or other movie), the wider your potential and the things you will eventually end up achieving.
Potential cannot be measured in the now. If one could it would be a huge plus. Unfortunately we can only speculate about someone’s potential. We can even tell someone what we think their potential should be and use the carrot or stick approach to try make them attain that potential, but real potential is determined by the SELF. If you think that a person’s potential is to run a distance of 20km and the same person is of opinion that he is capable of doing just 5, guess what? Jip, five it will be.
Don’t ever sell yourself short. Never allow yourself to be less than you were born to be. You might have achieved a lot to date, but if you really put your mind to it you can, and will, achieve more.
Remember: Potential comes alive with action only.
