“Acceptance is the answer to all of my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation – some fact of my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God’s world by mistake” Alcoholic Anonymous If someone would have said something like this to me years ago I would have felt like hitting them; mostly because I was frustrated with the circumstances of my life but also because the idea that “I” needed to accept something as is, was asinine to me. I thought I needed to do everything I could to change the person, place, thing or situation. Ha! Well, let me tell you how that worked out for me…it was painful, frustrating and exhausting. It took a great deal of energy to try to convince someone who was not willing or interested in changing to see that their behavior was not acceptable to ME. Again, Ha! Today, after many years on my own spiritual journey I can say that I see life in a very different way. I choose to use the filter of Love. It took me a long time to get to this place and I still have times when I auto reset to my default human setting of victim. However, most of the time I can take that moment or two to breathe when I find myself confronted or uncomfortable to ask myself if I need to respond. Yes, there are times when I need to stand up for myself and I do so, with love and kindness. If someone else has another agenda for the interaction, I excuse myself. I don’t need to be right such that I surrender my peace. I value myself. We moved to Buffalo, NY from Califo ia last summer. It has been quite a change to the snow and cold and I have plenty of things to complain about yet the truth is I can’t change the weather so why spend the energy getting myself upset and frustrated when I can choose to see the beauty of snow. Plus, I giggle at how I can be excited and grateful for 19 degrees after a few days of 3 degrees. It’s all how you look at it!
