A few months ago, one of my clients shared with menthat she had been unconsciously keeping hernbusiness small, because she didn't trust shencould manage it if it were bigger. She couldnhandle the customers she had now, but if she took onnmore, she might not be able to give them qualitynservice. Her solution was to stay small so she ncould stay in control.

She was operating like many small business ownersnand had developed what I call, "octopusnsyndrome", thinking you have to do everythingnyourself, and as a result you want to grow morenarms, and have more hours in the day, to getnthings done.

Sound familiar? Many small business people beginnall on their own,and because money is tight, nthey do everything themselves. Whatnhappens is, that being human, people do what theynenjoy or feel comfortable doing and avoid everything nelse. I did this for over anyear with my bookkeeping. For some reason, I felt
I had to do it myself. Well, I hate bookkeeping.
OK- maybe hate is a strong word.
I intensely dislike it. As a result, it didn'tnget done. I would much rather write articles, ncreate new products and develop newnprograms because that part is fun and easy fornme.

I finally woke up one day and a bolt ofnlightening struck - I hired na bookkeeper for $40 month. Forty dollars anmonth! That is nothing in terms of businessnexpense, but I had a mental block and thought Inhad to do it myself.

My client woke up as well, and hired an employeento work with her so she could manage morencustomers. It sounds obvious, doesn't it, butnwhen you are in the middle of the problem, allnyou see is the problem not the solution.

Why didn't she see this solution sooner?
She had her own mental block around trusting thatnher client base and income would stay strong.
She also didn't want to give up herncontrol. Lastly, she had a hidden fear of successnand conce
that she wouldn't have the ability to nhandle it. However, now her business is growing and nshe is getting ready to hire a second person. Her nrevenue has doubled in just six months.

How are you keeping your business small in orde
to hide or feel safe?

What would be scary about being bigger?
