What exactly does metabolism mean? Metabolism is the process in which your body converts all your food and drink into energy to sustain life. You are constantly burning energy, whether you are working out, sleeping, or even just reading this article as your body has to provide all the energy for you to do these things. The rate at which your body processes this energy is considered to be your metabolism.

At some level, we all understand that we need to move around more if we want to lose weight. However, the good news is they don't actually have to go to a gym. It can be as simple as merely making the decision to get up off the sofa and to walk around your house a little bit more. If you live in an area that has parched, consider going to a park and going for a walk. The whole idea is that you need to move around more.

The second factor accounting for 20% of your calories burned comes from exercise and physical activity. This means the total amount of physical work that you do within a twenty four hour period can either increase or decrease your metabolism accordingly. Obviously, the more sedentary you are the less total calories you are going to burn over the course of the day. That is why exercising and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle is so important to losing weight. If you are more active, you are going to burn more overall calories and the faster your metabolism will be on a day to day basis. Exercising daily is an important means of increasing your metabolism to boost your overall BMR.

The best news is you don’t have to spend 30 – 60 minutes per day exercising. Aerobic exercise is dead if you are looking for a strong heart or to eliminate fat cells from your butt, thighs, gut, arms and face. What you want to do is think like a sprinter not a long distance runner. Pick your exercise and do short bursts as hard and fast as you can until you have to stop to get your breath 2 – 3 minutes. Then repeat. This process takes 7 – 12 minutes and your metabolism will be set to burn fat for the entire day. It's also a good habit to begin exercising every morning even with simple calisthenics.

People who use dieting as a method of losing weight should pay special attention to their metabolism. Eating too few calories can send the body into what is known as 'starvation mode', where it drops the metabolic rate dramatically due to a lack of calories, choosing instead to store what is eaten as fat ready for emergencies, slowing down the body and leaving it sluggish and lacking energy.

Conditions in which there is interference with the usual elimination of sodium cause increased water retention and gain in weight. Examples are heart failure, toxemia of pregnancy, hardening or cirrhosis of the liver and congestive heart failure. Elimination of water is improved by stopping salt, improving heart action, or by drugs which increase the action of the kidneys.
