Abstract
In today’s world, a person is judged by his face appearance and brain skills or ability of the brain to complete tasks in a proper manner. Combination of face and brainpower is required to maintain your space in the eyes of society. But, what if both face look and brain’s ability decreases or spoils? Is it possible? Yes, a disease named as Oromandibular dystonia interferes with your face appearance and generates unbalance in normal brain functioning. Our today’s discussion will be based on oromandibular dystonia and how we can treat it with herbal medicines.Introduction
Oromandibular dystonia is a type of dystonia or movement disorder affecting jaw, pharynx, face or tongue in a person’s body and he may experience trouble in swallowing or chewing, drooling and has slurred speech due to involuntary muscle contractions of face, jaw or tongue. It is a painful condition and occurs with blepharospasms or cervical dystonia and more common in women as comparative to men. Oromandibular dystonia is also known as cranial dystonia which is a broad definition for dystonia affecting any area of the mouth and face. The type of dystonia that affects the lip and face muscle of wind instruments players are known as embouchure dystonia where tongue affecting dystonia is known as lingual dystonia. Don’t confuse between the name of Oromandibular dystonia and Temporomandibular joint disease, as it is an arthritic condition.
Symptoms
Usually symptoms of oromandibular dystonia are observed in later stages of life which is an age between 40 and 70 years. Major signs and symptoms observed in patients of oromandibular dystonia are- Involuntarily opening of mouth
- Clenching of jaw
- Involuntary tongue movements
- Involuntary face and lip movements
- Bottom area of jaw shift toward back direction or toward one side
- Difficulty in breathing
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Headache
- Dental problems
- Orofacial disfiguration
Causes
The exact cause of oromandibular dystonia is still unknown and scientists assume that it is a result of excessive signals developing from the brain that makes the muscles contract in an inappropriate manner. But the reason behind excess signals delivery by the brain is not known yet. Hereditary conditions can also cause this disease which means oromandibular dystonia can pass from parents to their child. Prolonged intake of several medicines can also develop oromandibular dystonia in an individual.Risk Factors
Factors Which Can Trigger the Development of Oromandibular Dystonia Are- Family history of tremors.
- Prolonged use of neuroleptic drugs.
- Injury of peripheral nerves.
- An associated movement disorder.

Complications
