This year’s competition may be over; but there will be another American Idol next year. And, there will be hundreds of thousands of would-be superstars entertaining ideas about being “The One.” But, to anyone who’s ever watched that show, it’s obvious that most people don’t really give much thought to the process of becoming an American Idol. There are a couple obvious things you can do to increase your chances of being the next winner on American Idol – or at least improve your odds of getting a ticket to go to Hollywood.
There are essentially three-things you could do between now and the beginning of the next season of American Idol that would dramatically increase your chances of success – and put you miles ahead of the average person who tries out:
- Dream about happily singing in front of lots of people; Dream about being a star;
- Learn to sing; Practice singing – sing a lot;
- Overcome your fears, doubts, and nervousness.
Practically everyone who advances in the competition says that they have always dreamed of being a singer, or a star. If you haven’t, but think American Idol is a quick trip to the top, then you’re not going to make it very far. There’s never been an American Idol winner who said, “Yeah, I didn’t have anything else to do; so, I thought I’d try singing.” American Idol isn’t going to be won by someone with a casual interest in being famous and making lots of money. You need to cultivate a dream like this; and you do that by dreaming – praying, mentally rehearsing, visualizing, or imagining…
The other common mistake people make is showing up for a singing audition without knowing how to sing. Anyone can learn to sing; but you should start now – not wait for next year’s auditions. Unless you want to be one of the “funny outtakes,” you’ll learn to sing and practice as much as you can. It would be a good idea to do some of that singing in front of people in order to get feedback – and experience singing to an audience. Singing in front of people will also help you find the fears, doubts, and nervousness that you’ll have to overcome if you want a golden ticket.
Nervousness, anxiety, fear of performing, or public speaking, can all cause stress and all of the negative effects of stress – including trouble controlling your breathing, a cracking voice, difficulty remembering things (lyrics, for example), shaking, and many other physical, mental, and emotional distractions that will definitely ruin any performance or audition. The next winner of American Idol – and every other winner – will be the one who performed under pressure despite fear and nerves. Experience and exposure to your fears can help you overcome them; but there are much quicker ways – methods that can improve your singing, confidence, and comfort while eliminating fears, worries, anxiety, stress, and other limiting or inhibiting conditions. Try some of the new energy psychology techniques such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), Z-Point, TAT, or Psychological Kinesiology, to quickly overcome fears and limitations and unleash the winner in you.
