On the morning following a night of binge drinking, it's not uncommon to be in a mild state of anxiety and depression. Many people drink alcohol completely unaware that it's a depressant and not a stimulant as most people would think. 3 out of 10 of teens engage in binge drinking once a week. Shockingly, one third of suicides in teenagers involve heavy drinking.
Many of us enjoy alcohol to help us relax or lose our inhibitions. However there are some people who drink for other reasons. Sufferers of social anxiety disorder fear being in the presence of others. Sufferers are usually overly self-conscious and anxious. In addition they dread the thought of being ridiculed or laughed at.
In social situations they will try and avoid standing out and interacting. Alcohol is often relied on at social gatherings by sufferers in an effort to cover their anxiety. Most sufferers however do not realize that alcohol only intensifies anxiety attacks.
As they become more anxious they try and cover up their feelings by drinking more. This might make the sufferer unpredictable; happy one moment and angry the next. The next morning they feel hung-over, experiencing headaches, shaking, sweating, muscle ache.
Experiencing anxiety and depression in the morning is also common. They might feel irritable, unable to concentrate and have depressing thoughts about their life. Unable to face the world they may start to binge drink to counter negative emotions. In time their dependency on alcohol increases.
Those who drink excessively find that their anxiety and depression only intensify. Alcohol dependent sufferers learn that it is tremendously difficult to stop drinking. In order to successfully treat anxiety, sufferers must stop binging.
People who suffer from anxiety or depression may feel hopeless, unhappy and unable to cope with daily life. Alcohol might be turned to in an attempt to numb thoughts and emotions. Drinking heavily is also a way to harm themselves.
Behavior like this can deteriorate health further and lead to a sufferer taking their own life. Other ways to run away from problems include drug use. Initially, this might seem like a good idea to some but in the long run, anxiety and depression worsens.
It's best to stay away from alcohol when suffering from anxiety and depression. Binging affects the chemistry of the brain making it harder to overcome anxiety disorders. Although treatments can be successful, the time it takes to full recovery depends on various factors including alcohol consumption.
