Are People Who Set Goals Happier?

Research has shown that many factors determine how happy a person is. Some of it may be genetic, and some may be circumstances. Abraham Lincoln is quoted as saying "People are about as happy as they make their minds up to be", which is true. However their is research that says people who set goals and accomplish them are happier and maintain their happiness for several months afterwards.
However not all goals produce happiness. The goals must be aligned with your actual interests and values. If you are doing something because your parents, friends or spouse says you have to, it will not bring about long term happiness. It is important to make a list of your dreams and do what is best for you, not because someone says you have to. An example would be going to college just because all your friends are going, when you really wanted to go in to the military - chances are if you don't really want to go, you will not be successful in college. However if your goal was a college degree, you will have a much higher chance of success.
Having a goal that is satisfying to pursue also adds to happiness. If the only reason you set a goal was for financial rewards or to have others admire your work, it will not be as satisfying. You need to determine the "why" behind the goal. Knowing why you personally want to accomplish a goal will also keep you motivated to complete the task to the end.
