The Art of Change
I was inspired to write this article because I have recently relocated from San Francisco to Seattle. With any relocation brings a change or two with it. The first week I was here, every time I stepped out of the door I felt like I was in the Land of Oz. Even though I have visited Seattle plenty of times over the last 30 years, it all feels different to me knowing I am navigating my life here now. I have found three strategies that allow me to adapt to new environments and keep in the organic and orgasmic flow. Listening more than talking is always my first strategy. My attention and intention is on learning new habits, systems and structures that allow me to be my best. Where will I take my walks? Where will I meditate? What do I do, and where do I go to feel at home? Listening to the locals around me give me ideas for all of that. Self-care and finding my routines always comes first. Learning where the grocery store, gas station, bus stop, and landmarks for north, south, east and west become an acute new awareness. It is a different level of listening. I know that I am stimulating a different part of my brain as I adapt to this new environment. Secondly, I ask myself how I can contribute to the whole of this new environment. It takes me out of the focus of not knowing, and into a creative way to view my change. I am staying with dear friends who have a wonderful10 year old boy. I am observing and being with the needs of this active household. How do I add to their flow, and they to mine. It is an "in the moment" consciousness of how to make every thing you do organic and orgasmic. I am always reminding myself not to judge my experiences as good and bad...only as learning. Finally, I remember everyday to acknowledge the courage, confidence and grace it takes to make changes and stay in the flow. Whether I am leaving Seattle for the countryside or making a trip to a new market, I congratulate myself every time I successfully navigate a new adventure on my own. Negotiating change is inevitable. BE the artist in your world of change. What are your three strategies for flowing with change?

***Rising Like a Phoenix
Sometimes, life smiles on you. It’s the kind of thing that nourishes hope. And then, life turns. And, well – you deal with it. Upon my return from Germany and settling the affairs of my late father, I retained a lawyer—with more money I did not have—to fight the eviction notice I’d received while I was abroad. I found a bankruptcy attorney and prepared myself to let it all go. Even though I had just negotiated a huge deal with Getty Images, the largest such distributor in the world, I realized that I might not make it to see my business turn a profit.

***Do What You Love AND Make Money
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do what we love and money would flow automatically? It actually can do this and it will, but not entirely by itself. An extra step is needed. Money comes around when it is actively pursued and it doesn’t when you neglect to do so. Let’s take a closer look at how making money fits into the day to day planning by the example of the average entrepreneurial business owner. Most of you have figured it out, but there is still a difference between getting something done and generating income. Let’s look at why that is.
