Assisting seniors to slip proof their home is an important part of in-home care. The National Safety Council reports that, “falls are the second leading cause of injury death for ages 55-79, but become even more prevalent for individuals over the age of 80. When all those age 65 and older are combined, falls account for 50 percent of all injury deaths.” Making the time to slip proof a home can prevent the heartache and injury a fall may bring to those caring for a parent.
Not long ago I had to help slip proof my parents’ home after Dad fell and broke his ankle. I learned my first caregiver lesson about slip proofing from the ER doctor who advised us that one of Dad’s medications could have caused the dizziness that led to his spill. He healed quickly, but he could have fallen again had the ER doctor not informed us of the side effect. We saw his Geriatric Care Dr. who changed the medication and examined him to make sure there were no other underlying medical conditions that might cause a tumble.
As their caregiver I knew I had to help prevent future falls, so I approached them and explained my intent was to help them to continue living independently and it became an in home care team effort instead of one they felt I was forcing on them.
We began this senior assistance project by clearing floors of clutter, checking for slippery spots and making sure that throw rugs had carpet backing to secure them in place. We moved electrical wires out of their path and examined stairs for any obstacles. We examined handrails to make sure they were well anchored for senior assistance. Another important in home care tip we followed was to move any necessary out of reach items within easy grasp.
Studies shows that senior assistance efforts to slip proof a home help prevent falls, provide a safer environment and contribute to a healthier and longer life. Remember, the first challenge of slip proofing is assuring the individual(s) that a caregiver wants to help them continue living independently. Sometimes all that takes is a reminder that allowing caregivers to help may save us all time and tears in the long run.
