- Ulcerative colitis is a disease in which pitta dosha is most prominent in body. Vata dosha involvement is also seen in some cases. The disease occurs due to consumption of pitta-aggravating foods. Modern lifestyle damages the blood tissue and muscle tissue, which leads to the formation of ama. Ama (endotoxins) gets deposited in the intestines and impairs normal function and immunity of the intestines.
- In ulcerative colitis vata dosha is aggravated in the lower colon, pitta & kapha blocks the channels in the early stages. These doshas cause mucous accumulation, inflammation and edema. Ayurvedic treatment of ulcerative colitis focuses on eliminating ama formation, balances tridosha and restores healthy digestion in body. Treats ulcers naturally, increases strength and immunity in body.
WHAT IS ULCERATIVE COLITIS?
- Ulcerative colitis is characterized an inflammatory bowel disease. This disease causes inflammation, formation of ulcers on inner lining of colon and rectum. These ulcers sometimes cause bleeding, discharge of mucus and pus in stools.
- The disease usually begins in the rectum and spreads upwards. It can affect the entire colon in body. This disease affects people of all ages. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35.
CAUSES OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS:
- As per Ayurvedic point of view the factors that vitiate the pitta dosha in body is the main reason for this disease. These include eating of food items like (spicy, sour or stale), excessive exposure to heat or sun, stress, lack of sleep, excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking etc. Food allergies, genetic factors, autoimmune factors and infections are main cause of inflammation in ulcerative colitis.
SYMPTOMS OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS:
Common symptoms of ulcerative colitis are:
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Weight loss
- Rectal pain
- Bloody stools
- Increased abdominal sounds
- Loss of appetite
Additional symptoms of ulcerative colitis are:
- Swelling in joints
- Joint pain
- Mouth sores
- Nausea
- Inflammation in eyes
DIAGNOSIS OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS
- Through different tests you can diagnose ulcerative colitis. Test to diagnose ulcerative colitis include:
- Stool test: Examine your stool for bacteria, blood and parasites.
- CT scan: Go for a specialized X-ray of your abdomen and pelvis.
- Endoscopy: Examine your stomach, esophagus and small intestine.
- Colonoscopy: Examination of colon is done by this test.
- Biopsy: A tissue sample from your colon is taken for analysis.

The herb helps in balancing the pitta dosha and rakta dhatu (blood circulation) in body. Consumption of these capsules reduce abdominal swelling and inflammation in ulcerative colitis case. It helps to stop bleeding, control diarrhea, heal ulcers and prevent inflammation associated with ulcerative colitis.
Recommended dosage: Two capsules twice daily with plain water after meals.
VATSAKADI CHU A:
- This chu a is prepared from the combination of various ayurvedic herbs. The ingredients used for the preparation of this chu a are kutaz, bilva, saunf, dhania, anar and choti elaichi etc. These herbs have anti-spasmodic, anti-biotic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-oxidant & anti-dysenteric properties. This chu a has positive effect on inflammation, gastric problem, and diarrhea and improves the tone of intestines.
- Kutaz (Holarrhena antidysenterica): This herb is beneficial in bleeding disorders, improves digestion, and detoxifies blood, effective in fever and diarrhea. Balances tridosha in the body.
- Bilva (Aegle marmelos): The herb gives effective result in digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and diarrhea.
- Saunf (Foeniculum vulgare): This herb is very effective for purification of blood and elimination of toxins from the body.
- Dhania (Coriander sativum): It is the most common herb in ayurveda. This herb eliminates swelling, pain and inflammation.
- Choti Elaichi (Eletteria cardomum): The herb is used for maintaining digestive problem related with ulcerative colitis.
- Jaiphal (Mysristica fragrans): This is one of the best herb for digestive system. It has analgesic, stimulant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The herb is beneficial in pain, inflammation and swelling.
Recommended dosage: One teaspoonful twice daily with plain water after meals.
KUTAZAGHAN VATI:
- Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica) is used for the preparation of these tablets. The herb used in this vati is beneficial in diarrhea, dysentery, improper functioning of intestines and irritable bowel syndrome conditions. It has astringent, amoebicidal, anthelmintic, immune-booster and diuretic properties.
Recommended dosage: Two tablets twice daily with plain water after meals.
PITTA BALANCE:
- It is consider as the most effective product for balancing pitta dosha mainly. The ingredients present in the formation of this product are praval pishti, akik pishti, Kamdudha ras, mukta pishti etc. Natural calciums are used for the preparation of these capsules.These capsules are very beneficial in acidity, ulcers, heartburn, indigestion, flatulence, gastric problem and abdominal pain conditions. The capsules increase digestive fire in the body.
