The beginning of a new calendar year sparks a new life in most of us. It’s like beginning a new page in a journal or moving into a new house. There is a blank slate and many possibilities. What are you imagining for yourself in 2008? “Born to be Great in 2008,” is a wonderful affirmation that can be your motto for the new year. The big question then becomes, “Are you ready to be great?”

I love this quote from “Return to Love” by Maryann Williamson. n“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

You have a role of greatness to play. You have been given a light within that needs to shine itself into the world. It is a light that is bright enough to liberate you from your darkest fears, while giving others permission to do the same. There is not another ‘you” in the world. You were born with gifts, talents, and skills that are unique to you. Only “you” can play the role of “you.” Your family, friends, and community are unique to you. How you live your life makes a difference to those you interact with on a daily basis.

In the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey had a chance to experience what the world would be like without him. Each one of us has a unique influence in the world around us. For most of us, our greatness changes the world in subtle ways through our thoughts, words and actions. We are inspired when someone else expresses their greatness. How about you being the one to inspire someone else? Once you initiate this, a marvelous chain reaction of “greatness inspiring greatness” begins to unfold.

Take some time at the beginning of this year to consider how you can take one step in claiming your greatness. Claiming your greatness begins with life’s everyday events. It may help you to choose from one of these four areas: Career, Money, Health and Relationships. How are you playing small? Where are you allowing your choices to be less than you know they could be? Where are you allowing your fears to stand in the way of sharing your gifts and talents? What adjustments do you need to make so that you can play bigger? Do you need to let go of a habit, or an outdated way of thinking? What new thought or action can you begin taking that will propel you forward to express your greatness?

I like this quote by Vincent Van Gogh. “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” Greatness often happens when we have a vision, a plan in place and we consciously make our choices accordingly.” You truly serve the world when you express your greatness. You were “Born to be Great in 2008.” It’s time to begin your journey!
