Cats Do Understand Us!

My wife believes that our two cats understand just about anything we say. I’m talking about them understanding the WORDS! Like they have their own dictionaries, or something!

I have always held to the philosophy that cats probably can understand our non-verbal communications; our eye movements, other body motions and facial expressions, rather than specific words.

But, I am not so sure they don't make some kind of word/sound associations. Why not?

When my wife mentions the word "chicken" as she gets ready to prepare a chicken meal, Mattie (our male cat) invariably shows up and nudges against her legs, thanking her, in advance, for the chicken treat he knows is on its way.

Mattie, you see, is a true chicken-loving cat, and it is truly uncanny how he seems to know the word “chicken”!

I also happen to believe that cats can pretty nearly read our minds! Not in the literal sense, but it is almost as though they can see into the depths of the soul, sometimes. To stare into a cat's eyes is to peer into a realm of mystique and mystery; and oh, how wonderfully positive an experience!

We have had a number of cats over the years, and I must say that each one of them demonstrated their unique capability to understand us. We learned to understand them, as well. They "spoke" to us in a variety of tones and inflections; and, quite unmistakably, for a variety of meanings and reasons.

I believe that all life is connected on some level. And, I believe that all life can communicate on some level. I think it's a case of most of us needing to slow down a little so we can hear the subtle messages and lessons from our dear friends and “family” all around us.

As we learn to stop and smell the roses, we can begin to see a whole different picture of life, and how it all works together in such perfect harmony. The miraculously balanced cycles of life provide perpetually for the needs of all, and even the elements, the weather patterns, and other natural events play important roles in the synergistic, living organism we call our home!

I think often of the story of Daniel, in the Bible. When Daniel was placed into the lions’ den, everyone expected he would be devoured in a moment’s time. But, Daniel was not harmed at all by the lions. Instead, he made peace with them; perhaps he knew how to communicate with them; after all, we ARE all in this together!!
