Il poker è un gioco di carte assai celebre, che include sia un fattore tattico-strategico sia un elementoaleatoria. L'obiettivo di qualsiasi game di poker é quello di aggiudicarsi il montepremi posto nel mezzo del tavolo che viene, in codice, chiamato piatto. Il piattoviene assegnato al giocatore che realizza la combinazione di 5 carte di maggior levatura o quella persona che riesce ad convincere gli avversari a "ritirarsi" (passare) dal gioco dapprima della sua interruzione.
Tra le varianti più popolari si annoverano il Texas Hold 'Em, lo Stud a sette e cinque carte, l'Omaha High, l'Horse ed il Razz (uno Stud a sette carte low). In Italia é abbastanza popolare una variante dello Stud che viene chiamata in gergo "Teresina".
Il poker è un gioco strategico. Persino con un set di carte pessime, un buon scommettitore puo’ avere allo stesso modo buone chances di vincere.
