Are you someone who just loves fatty foods? If so, then you may be setting yourself to be someone who just may be a candidate for some heart related problems. Studies have shown the relation of cholesterol and heart disease. Taking the necessary steps to avoid cholesterol and heart disease are necessary to avoid being another statistic. Medical studies have shown the rise in heart attacks as a result from having higher blood cholesterol levels. People with cholesterol levels that are higher than normal should do what is necessary to prevent themselves from becoming a victim to any form of degenerative disease by bringing their cholesterol levels down. Fortunately, this can be achieved by a low cholesterol diet and also participating in moderate physical activity. Having proper nutrition can help prevent cholesterol and heart disease problems. Cholesterol Levels What exactly is cholesterol. Cholesterol is a kind of a lipid, a soft, fat-like substance that will serve as a source of fuel. Having high cholesterol will lead to building-up of atherosclerotic plaque. With the accumulation of of this plaque in the arteries it will block blood flow and cause to a heart attack. LDL cholesterol, also know as the so-called “bad” cholesterol, is delivered to sites all through the body. This is where it is used to repair cell membranes or to make hormones. LDL cholesterol will gather in the walls of your arteries. HDL cholesterol, also know as the so-called “good” cholesterol, delivers cholesterol to the liver, where it’s altered and removed from the body. Although we think of cholesterol as being bad, there is some good to it. Cholesterol plays a big part of our body’s complete metabolism. Some of the functions of cholesterol are the formation of cell membranes and the responsibility of producing vitami D and other hormones in the human body. On the flip side, having high cholesterol levels may cause damage our entire physical well being. This is when cholesterol and heart disease may become a problem. Anyone can have unhealthy cholesterol levels and the numbers show that one in five people have high cholesterol. In many cases, high cholesterol can happen to people who eat fairly healthy because it is inherited. So even though it may not be your fault, it is still very important to treat it as soon as possible. If you feel you are at risk of having high cholesterol then you should have it tested. It is important to maintain healthy eating habits and exercise on a regularly basis as this may lower your cholesterol levels. Fighting Cholesterol Levels With Diet Here are some tips to help you fight high cholesterol in your diet. *Eat in moderation. Eating excess amounts of food will lead to an increase in weight. *Stay away from sweets, especially pastries because they are a major source of saturated fats. * Increase your fiber intake. Foods that are rich in fiber are able to lower cholesterol in the blood. * Eat the basics foods like raw fruits and vegetables as they can help you lower your cholesterol. * Lower your fat intake. Educate yourself on what food labels really means. When a food label says “low saturated fat,” “low cholesterol” or “cholesterol-free” it doesn’t always mean the product is going to be low in fat. * Switch your side orders to healthy sides. Fruit is a much better selection for you than fries. * Staying active when on a low-cholesterol diet will also help in controlling cholesterol. Taking steps to help lower cholesterol can be an important part to avoiding cholesterol and heart disease.
