This article aims to examine cold turkey in combination with positive thinking as a method of smoking cessation.
First attempts to stop smoking are frequently unsuccessful
Although the first attempts to stop smoking are often unsuccessful, this doesn’t mean that you will be unsuccessful on your first attempt. It has been suggested that one reason that first attempts to quit tobacco may be unsuccessful are because they are not serious or committed attempts (Chapman et al.. PLoS Medicine (Public Library of Science) 7, 2010).
As such, you need to be committed to enhance your effort to stop smoking.
What exactly does “Cold turkey” mean?
In the context of quitting nicotine,"Cold turkey" means suddenly quitting of the use of nicotine in any form.
Estimates if people whi have successfully quit smoking have used this method are as high as 80-90% (Doran et al. Addict Behav. May;31:758-66, 2006).
What are the advantages of Cold Turkey to Quit Smoking?
There are 2 main advantages of using cold turkey to quit smoking.
1. It is completely free!
2. The actual process of stopping your consumption of nicotine takes seconds. In fact, you have quit using nicotine the second you stub out your last cigarette.
How Positive Thinking may augment your chances to successfully Stop Smoking?
I stopped smoking using cold turkey. I used to smoke 30 cigarettes every day. I did this for over 30 years. My first attempts to stop smoking were not successful.
However, I eventually succeeded in stopping smoking with the help of positive thinking. Furthermore, quitting smoking was relatively stress-free for me.
Before my successful quit smoking attempt, I trained myself to believe that stopping smoking was not difficult and that I would be successful.
Believing that you will succeed appears to be an important factor in any challenge including quitting smoking.
There are statistics available on smokers who had successfully stopped smoking using cold turkey (Chapman et al, PLoS Medicine (Public Library of Science) 7. 2010.
53% found that stopping was “not at all difficult”
27% found it “fairly difficult”
20% found it very difficult
This emphasises the significance of positive thinking. People who quit smoking who are positive thinkers often believe that they will be successful.
