One of the biggest and most common threats to living a long healthy life, diabetes, may have come up against it's match. Ironically, the answer to fend off this disease is abundantly found within the human body. nn

World-wide medical studies using adult stem cells derived from human bone marrow has shown absolutely exciting results. The April 11, 2007 issue of The Times UK published an article entitled "Diabetics cured by Stem Cell treatment." This editorial focused on a breakthrough trial of fifteen young patients suffering from type 1 diabetes. The patients received transfusions of stem cell taken from their own bodies. nn

As reported in the journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), all but two volunteers in the trial do not need daily insulin injections up to three years after stopping their treatments. nn

Another study with amazingly similar results comes from Brazil. In this trial thirteen patients between the ages of 14 -31, all with type 1 diabetes, were treated intravenously with their own adult bone marrow stem cells. nn

All but two of them are insulin free after undergoing the treatment. Interestingly, one of the two study subjects who did not make the insulin free group was in fact insulin free for the first year after his treatment, but then relapsed. nn

Type 2 Diabetes nn

Research conducted at Tulane University found similar results with type 2 diabetes. In one study performed on rats who were injected with human adult stem cells, within a short fours weeks demonstrated significant increase in their ability to produce insulin. In addition, these rats also showed an overall improvement in the pancreas and kidney functions. nn

Dr. Darwin J Prockop, director of Tulane University's Center for Gene Therapy drew some very positive conclusions from the fore mentioned research. Dr Prockop believes these results suggest possible new treatments for people with diabetes, and especially for the 8 million people in the United States alone whose worsening diabetes is causing kidney failure. nn

Although science has not officially found a cure to diabetes, research proves that the world is on the brink of a breakthrough. Adult stem cells derived from the bone marrow have shown to be effective in the regeneration, restructuring and rejuvenation of organs that are effected by diabetes. This major advancement may be the missing key to eliminating this insidious disease once and for all.
