Ask someone why they decided to subscribe to a plant based diet and it will likely be one of three reasons.

1. Health

2. Compassion to animals

3. The environment.

Although they may begin for one reason, often they find all three become their motivation over time. This was my experience.

Initially, I began for health reasons. I had severe inflammation in my right hand. Deciding to literally take matters into my own hands, I gave it seven days to see if a plant based diet would help.

Within two days, the inflammation was gone and has not returned. That was just the beginning of my health improvements. I’m likely healthier now than at any other point in my life.

Ethics

However, after digging deep into what it meant to be plant based, ethics and my love of animals became a driving force. When you research factory farming, most sane people will admit that this is likely the most inhumane thing to do to animals.

“But what will happen to all the animals?” I had one woman ask me.

“What do you mean?” I responded.

“They will become extinct,” she said.

She is convinced if we do away with factory farming, cows, pigs and sheep will no longer exist.

The fact is, the majority of animals people consume are bred for one simple reason, to eat. Do away with the desire people have to consume animal products and much of the breeding will stop. Does this mean the animals will become extinct? Not at all. It simply means we won’t breed the hell out of them for one sole purpose, our desire to eat them.

To continue to support factory farming out of fear of extinction of certain animals is absolutely crazy. Folks, the animals are bred for one reason and one reason only… to kill them and eat them. To believe anything else is the belief of fools.

Environment

Yet another reason, and one that is becoming more urgent by the day, is switching to a plant based diet to heal the planet. Anyone who doesn’t recognize the damage animal factory farming is doing to the environment is not paying attention.

For example, our oceans are being impacted by the choices people make to eat fish.

“If we do not take urgent action to restore and protect our ocean we will soon face an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”

This is a direct quote from an article on the World Economic Forum blog. https://plantbasedeatingforhealth.com/2019/01/18/our-oceans-are-at-risk-plant-based-eating-can-help/

The fact is, going plant based is likely the most sane, responsible and compassionate action you can take in today’s upside down world.

“How can one person make a difference?” is often the weak excuse some use not to make a change. When you add up how much water, grain, land and resources are used for each person who is meat and dairy based, it doesn’t take much to see that every person who makes the change to a plant based diet DOES make a difference.

According to Dr. Joel Kahn, the impact would be beyond belief if every U.S. citizen adopted a vegetarian diet for just one day. Keeping in mind that the impact of going full vegan would be even greater than vegetarian, as a country we would save:

-100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost four monthsrn-1.5 billion pounds of crops that would otherwise be fed to livestock—enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a yearrn-70 million gallons of gas, enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to sparern-3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delawarern-33 tons of antibioticsrn-1.2 million tons of CO2, or the same amount produced by all of Francern-3 million tons of soil erosion and $70 million in resulting economic damagesrn-4.5 million tons of animal excrement, which would eliminate almost 7 tons of ammonia emissions, a major air pollutant

We CAN make a difference. The future is in our hands today. Make the decision to become more conscious of what you are consume. You might start for one reason, but if you’re like many of us who have gone plant based, you end up sticking with this protocol for all three reasons.

Bottom line is this; it’s more humane, healthier and environmentally loving. Simple as that.

As I drove by a billboard on the side of the freeway indicating what the jackpot is this week, it occurred to me that many people who win the lottery actually end up with numerous problems that didn't exist prior to winning.
