Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch, non-invasive form of body work that naturally relieves pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your over-all health and well-being. It is an alte
ative approach to traditional healthcare that was developed in clinical trials at Michigan State University by Dr. John Upledger in the 1970's.

Today there are a variety of treatments available for Autism but Craniosacral Therapy has proven to be outstanding among popular methods of alte
ative treatment.

Dr. Carlos Pardo, researcher at Johns Hopkins University, in his detailed analysis of Autism patients, found the presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory changes in the cerebrospinal fluid of Autism patients he studied. Dr. Pardo's research suggested that these changes can compromise the functioning of the body's craniosacral system and cause probable inflammation of the membrane layers surrounding the brain.

Craniosacral Therapy focuses on balancing the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and increasing mobility of the membrane layers surrounding the brain, helping the brain flush toxins and inflammation out of the brain. It gently and non-intrusively unlocks cerebrospinal fluid passageways along the length of the spinal cord, central nervous system and brain. In the case of Autistic patients, increased mobility of brain tissues and fluids helps decrease the abnormal strain the brain has been under. Brain cells are then better able to process and react to all sorts of information.

When used as an adjunct to conventional medical care, Craniosacral Therapy should be continued until the Autistic child reaches adulthood since there is a tendency of membranes to tighten as growth spurts occur. Parents of children with Autism often report that, after Craniosacral Therapy sessions, their child is better able to express love and affection, makes better eye contact, and demonstrates improved socialization. Improved functioning of the craniosacral system has been shown to be beneficial in relieving typical autistic behaviors such as head banging, thumb sucking and toe walking.

Because of its positive effect on so many body systems, Craniosacral Therapy is now practiced by a variety of healthcare professionals including, Acupuncturists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, Massage Therapists and other professional bodyworkers.
