Creating a personal garden is not difficult all you need is some basic supplies, equipment and a small amount of land.
  • It is important to keep in mind that gardening, whether you are working from seedlings or seed, takes time and patience.
  • This is why it is important to make sure that you take the time to plan out what you want to create, where it is going to be placed and how you are going to take care of handling watering, fertilizing, weeding and making sure that your plants are safe from both bugs and beasts.
Most avid gardeners will tell you that they take the time to sit down, plan where they want each plant to go and consider a variety of options.
  • These options may be seasonal or may be designed to provide a variety of annual and perennial displays.
  • Vegetable gardens tend to be easier to plan since they are generally not planned for color or beauty but functionality.
Draw out what you want to do and plan how many of each type of plant you want to place in your garden. Decide if you want to consider starting from mature plants, already established seedlings or seeds.
  • Depending on what you decide, mature seedlings or seed you may have additional planning and steps to do before you can actually plant your garden.
  • Consider the weather in your areas and if you are looking to start from seeds consider a small portable greenhouse.
  • This will allow you to grow the seeds into seedlings during the winter season to plant in spring. This will help to give your garden a jump-start.
After you have planned your garden, it is time to purchase the supplies and equipment that you are going to need.
  • You will need to purchase the plants, the equipment necessary to weed, till and prepare the ground, as well as any soil and fertilizer that you need.
  • Once you have all the materials that you are going to need to create your garden it is time to get started with preparing the ground.
Preparation of the ground is going to be different depending on the base soil that you have available.
  • Many people start a compost heap and spend some time mixing the compost into the soil to order to create a better base soil.
  • They then add top soil in addition to whatever other nutrients might be necessary in the form of fertilizer before planting.
  • This gives the plants the optimum medium to grow.
Next plant your seeds, water and weed regularly based on the climate and plants chosen and wait for your plants to grow.
  • This is all there is to planning and creating a garden of your own.
  • A fence with chicken wire will keep most beasts out of a vegetable garden and there are a number of herb and pesticides both organic and chemically based that can provide your plants with the protection they need.

The common or garden boiled potato has slid out of fashion in recent years for various reasons. One contributing factor is the ever increasing number of tasty potato-style snacks available, making boiled spuds seem flavourless and boring. Of course another problem has been all the fad diets over the last generation or two, often convincing us that potatoes are full of calories, or belong to the dreaded ‘carb’ family and should be avoided at all costs.
