We’ve all been there: we’ve entered our laundry areas and laundry rooms to get some work done, and noticed that things are all over the place. The detergent is spilling over onto the floor; the dryer sheets have long come out of their box and the laundry, of course, is piled everywhere. Forget the hangers where you’ll put the delicates, or the iron and the ironing board. Forget organization. Today, it isn’t going to happen. But what if today was the day that you got organized?
You might not know it, but with a few simple tools and tricks, you can bring your laundry room back to life. You can get organized. It just takes some organizers!
The best kind of laundry rooms are the ones where everything sits in its place. A place for dryer sheets. A place for detergent and fabric softener. A place for the iron and the ironing board. A place where the laundry can be folded – all in one versatile room. While this sounds like a luxury, in truth, it’s the way every laundry room should be, and more importantly, can be! With these clever and helpful organizers, you can cut a great deal of stress from your life.
The first thing you’re going to need in your laundry room is a good clothes hamper – or maybe even two, so that you can sort your laundry; your darks from your lights and your lights from your delicates. If you’re looking for something pulled straight from an interior design magazine, consider a bench hamper. This is a great option for those who like to keep their dirty clothes hidden, and it’s also great for a laundry room that shares a space with the mudroom. Because the clothes are hidden beneath the bench, you can keep the gross stuff out of sight and provide extra seating. Another option is a rolling hamper, which is great if you’ve moving your laundry from room to room. It’s a good idea to keep hampers in both your bedrooms and the laundry rooms – you don’t want to be carrying the same hampers back and forth.
Once your clothes are dry, you’ll have to iron them. Consider your next big purchase to be a good iron and a good clothing steamer. Many people don’t think to purchase a clothing steamer because it seems like something that should be left to the dry cleaner. However, more and more washer dryer units these days are able to do the same cleaning as the dry cleaner – and all you need to do to finish the job is to steam your clothing. If you purchase a steamer, you can save a fortune on dry cleaning by doing things yourself!
A good iron is also a great investment, of course. If you’re dealing with a small space, consider an over the door fold down ironing board. No longer will you have to fight with your small closet space to get the board in there. A fold down board is smaller, of course, but it gets the job done, and when you’re done with it, it folds up and away – like it was never there!
Another great investment is a fold away drying rack. Many of your clothes don’t belong in the dryer, but we often find ourselves tossing them in there anyway just so they’ll be out of the way. A great laundry room, however, is a room that’s equipped with a drying rack. Ideally, you’d have an entire closet area where you could hang your clothes to dry, but since not all of us have that much closet space, a foldable drying rack is a great option. You can drape your clothes and delicates over it to dry and voila – a great laundry room! Drying racks are perfect for those with small spaces, because they can be moved from room to room if need be, and once you’re done using them, they can be folded away and shoved in the closet or even under the bed!
The last thing to consider is storage for your laundry room. From shelving to rolling racks to cabinets and drawers, a place for everything means a laundry room that is well organized and hence, a life that’s less stressful. People often forget how much of an effect messes can have on their day to day lives. If your laundry room is a complete disaster every time you go in, you’re not only going to feel more stressed in general, but you’re going to avoid doing laundry like it’s the plague. A nice, neat, and well-organized laundry room is a laundry room that will get lots of use and hence, will keep the rest of your life better organized as well.
