The second factor is to make sure that you can make money from what you are offering. While there might not be competition in a certain area, there might not be money to be made either.
This is why you need to look for a market that resolves common issues. If you can appeal to the people who need problem resolution, they will spend money on you.
So where do you look for these money making markets?
You can start with Google Trends. Google Trends will tell you what is hot, so that you can identify a market, and get in on the market before it becomes oversaturated.
Amazon magazines is another place to look for markets. If a magazine is being created around a market, then there is money to be made.
Check out eBay Pulse as well. This is another great resource for findng money makers that will allow for you to become a major player.
How to perform your market research:
So, what comes next? First, you check your volume to see if you are gathering enough traffic to make a living from your site.
Google Keyword Tool can help you with this. If you have determined that your venture is drawing enough traffic, then you get to know the spending habits of this market.
You can find out this information on niche forums, and via your competitors. What are your competitors doing? See how they are gaining and spending money. Then you'll know what you can expect for your venture.
Then, check out the niche forums to see what issues others are having in the market. Look for the post that state issues and problems, and others are saying that they have the same problems and issues.
After all of this, start narrowing down on the one's that you believe will work. Then, the next step is to get going on your project.
