Detoxification refers to cleaning of blood. It is used as a treatment for alcoholism. Through this process body is allowed to dispose of the alcohol in the body and it also helps to manage withdrawal symptoms with ease. It is used for cleaning the body of alcohol, and then patient is treated with medicines and other psychological therapies. Detoxification or Detox needs follow up treatments for full recovery of the alcoholic. Detoxification is not a complete treatment and in fact, it is a part of a comprehensive program.
Detoxification or Detox work by eliminating alcohol from the body especially from blood and liver. This elimination is done through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. If the elimination process does not work properly, the deposits in the body could lead to adverse side effects. Thus detoxification is used. It cleans the system of alcohol and prepares the alcoholic for further treatment.
Alcoholism can be treated. To treat alcoholism many treatment programs and methods are used. These programs comprise of detoxification, medicines and various psychological or behavioural therapies. The first step in treatment is the desire to be treated or get rid of alcoholism. Though patients forced by others for treatments also start responding to treatment after some session, voluntarily residing to treatment immensely help in quicker recovery of the alcoholic. It also helps in prevention relapse episodes.
Every alcoholic suffers from withdrawal symptoms, once the person quits. The symptoms may be mild or severe depending on the extent of consuming alcohol and degree of dependency. Some patients may develop fatal withdrawal symptoms such as delirium and tremors. Its symptoms are confusion, hallucinations, convulsions, autonomic instability and death. Alcoholics, who are heavy drinkers and have been taking alcohol for a long time, need immediate medical help, when they decide to quit drinking habits.
Detoxification treatment for alcoholism is based on complete abstinence from alcohol. It is done in a controlled environment and patient is closely monitored for withdrawal symptoms, whether mild or severe in nature. Some patients are also given tranquilizers during Detoxification treatment. The whole process of alcohol detoxification can take three to seven days. It completely cleans the system of alcohol and the physical craving for alcohol is controlled.
After detoxification process the craving for alcohol is basically psychological as chemical and physical need of alcohol has been curbed out by detoxing the body of alcohol. The main challenge after detoxification is to prevent relapse episodes. There are many rehabilitation centres for alcoholic patients to provide them support to prevent relapses. They provide short term residential or in-patient hospitalization to long-term patients. They also offer counselling and other psychological therapies. They help an alcoholic to resist urge for drinking and keep sober.
Patients may need medication or other therapies after detoxification. They are provided with suitable treatment options as per their need. There are some alcohol deterrent medicines too, which make people sick on consuming alcohol. These medicines also help to keep the alcoholic away from drinking and decreases cravings for alcohol.
