Hypocortisolism also known as Addison's disease, is a rare health condition that affects the ability of the body to produce adrenal hormones (corticosteroids and mineralocorticoids). Treatment for Hypocortisolism requires oral medications to replace these hormones. In order to manage this hormonal disorder, No special diet is there that you must follow. CAUSE OF HYPOCORTISOLISM
Hypocortisolism is caused by the failure of the adrenal cortex. The Adrenal cortex is the outer layer of the adrenal glands, which is responsible for the production of cortisol, aldosterone, insulin and other substances as well.
Cortisol hormone helps the body respond to stress and slows down the inflammatory response of the immune system. This hormone also helps to maintain healthy blood pressure and heart function as well as in regulating the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
There occurs high potassium levels and low salt levels in the body due to the shortage of the cortisol hormone.
SYMPTOMS OF HYPOCORTISOLISM
A Person suffering from Hypocortisolism may experience following symptoms:
Adrenal fatiguer
Dizzinessr
Low blood pressurer
Loss of appetiter
Weight lossr
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Hyperpigmentation or darkening of areas of the skinr
DIET FOR PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM HYPOCORTISOLISM
Diet plays an important role in managing the symptoms of any disease. Like, if a person is taking medications for any disease and at the same time, he is taking diet that is actually causing that disease, then that person will take more time to recover from that condition. Hence, a person should be careful while choosing foods that are beneficial for him.
A patient suffering from Hypocortisolism should eat a healthy, low sugar and low fat diet. A patient should eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as a moderate amount of protein.
Foods high in vitamins and minerals are necessary to strengthen the immune system. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are sources of vitamins and minerals. Nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Magnesium and Essential fatty acids are most helpful in managing Hypocortisolism. Trans and saturated fats should be avoided as much as possible.
EXERCISE AND HYPOCORTISOLISM
Regular exercise helps to alleviate stress and depression that are associated with this disorder and hence advised for the patients who are suffering from this health problem. Exercise offers the same health benefits to the Hypocortisolism's patients as it provides benefit to the people without this disorder.
Hypocortisolism's patients can indulge in myriad activities such as rebounding exercises. Walking, jogging, golf, aerobic dancing, rowing, and gymnastics are some other exercises which can benefit a patient suffering from this disorder.
People with Hypocortisolism don't have to limit themselves to the gentle exercise only, but they can even perform vigorous activities. These activities may include long distance running and weight lifting exercise. But if you are going to perform strenuous exercise then you should consult your doctor first.
