If you’ve awaken to the realization of pursuing personal development, that’s a good place to start. Sometimes, it may be somewhat daunting trying to pick a particular aspect of self development to start with. Well, the first step is to do an inner search, in order to know the area that requires urgent attention, that would be the best aspect to start with.
When I began my personal development journey, I had to do a deep inner-search first. Then, it occurred to me that procrastination has robbed me of several life-changing opportunities and was still robbing me further. So, I had to start my personal development efforts on the area of procrastination. It was a long-period effort before I could notice significant change in that aspect (it took 2-years before I became a master over procrastination). It actually took such long time because I needed to get rid of this fastest killer of destiny (procrastination) completely.
When I spotted procrastination as the most urgent area of development in my life, I also made a list of other areas of personal development according to their order of urgency. So, once I was able to ‘learn to do it now’, it was easier to get other aspects fixed.
Here are some areas of self development, and you can actually start with any one depending on the urgency;
Procrastination
I am not putting procrastination first because I started with it. I only realized that if procrastination is properly dealt with, it is easier to accomplish other aspects since you have become equipped with a new spirit that says “Do it Now!” If you are a great procrastinator, it may not be needful venturing into other aspects of self development since you would end up shifting actions to another day (that may not actually come).
If you’ve dealt with procrastination, you can move on to other aspects of self development such as;
Learning to be Productive
Sometimes, a lot of people assume they are productive when they are not. The best way to find out your productivity level is to keep a time log of your daily activities. This way, you will find out the activities that receive the best part of your time each day. Once, I told a client to keep a time log of how she spends each day, she discovered that less than 4 hours is devoted to productive activities, while more hours go to frivolities such as shuffling papers, mail chats and idle chatters.
Career Enhancement
If you desire to move up in your career pursuit, this is also an aspect of self development. You are the one to tell yourself that it is time to move up, and the efforts also are entirely your responsibilities to undertake. You may seek help from a career guide in order to get clearer direction on how to go.
There are other several areas of self development such as communication skills, self awareness, positive thinking and more.
