How do you figure out what to do in life and how to do it? Start from your purpose. Get practical practice by choosing three small steps to do for now that matter to you. Then? Do one! Why does this approach work? Because goals matter to your growth.
Indeed, goals help you to figure out “What’s Next?!” from one moment to another.

Imagine a life without goals. You’d be constantly distracted. You’d be chasing any thought that crossed your mind. You’d blindly follow any message from advertising that caught your attention. You’d use all your resources pacifying any passing hunger that might arise (food, entertainment, whatever).

You’d be bored.

Okay, maybe not in one day.

But look at the statistics on people who win the lottery or inherit sudden wealth. It’s not pretty. Typically, folks are back to where they started quickly, with little or nothing to show for it.

Figuring out what to do in life and how to do it can be puzzling. Especially since you’re always going to be facing challenges of one kind or another. But if you look inward, you can see something you want to accomplish in your life. Because deep down, you know what matters to you.

That’s right. You know what’s important to you.

Okay, here’s the thing. You might not be acting on that information. But there’s a part of you that’s able to say, “THIS matters to me!”

You figure out what to do in life by making time to think about what matters to you. Then you choose some part that you can take action on.

Start from your purpose. How? Start with one thing you know matters to you.

When you look at one thing that matters to you, you can figure out actions you can take that will impact your life in that area.

From thinking deeply about one thing that matters to you, you gain a sense of purpose that gives you direction. Direction allows you to set goals.

One approach is to look at lifetime goals. Then look at what actions you can do over the coming few years, next year, next month, next week and today.

For example, being close to God is important to me. Prayer is an actio
I can take each moment of now. Over the coming years, I’ll make time to be in prayer individually and in community. That’s true for next year, next month, next week and today. Today, I took action. I made time for prayer, on my own and in my community. I found that I continued to grow spiritually. I find that to be true from one day to the next, repeatedly.

That’s one for me. What’s one for you?

Pick one thing that matters to you and put it into practice! Choose small steps to do for right now.

When you look at lifetime goals, you’re looking for small steps you can take in the current moment. What you’re seeking is clues to what your teeny tiny little steps might be so that you can experiment. You want a big picture for inspiration and for direction, not for a giant leap to take today!

Practicing figuring out what you want to achieve in life will get you thinking about your life. Thinking about your life will enable you to notice more of what matters to you.

When you practice by doing a small step today, you notice what’s important in more detail. Your small steps of practice guide you naturally to separate out what are distractions that simply do not matter to you.

Practicing real steps gives you insight into what things may distract you from what you care about. Those insights inspire you to take action to eliminate what you’ve seen are distracting you from what’s important to you.

When you’ve got inspiration from your own day to day practice, you follow through. Taking action when you’re inspired is easier and gives you confidence that motivates you to take more action.

Figuring out what to do to grow and to put something positive into your life is a challenge in and of itself. Starting from what matters to you both grounds you and gives you direction. Practicing small steps toward one goal makes a difference that begins to inspire you to take more action. Action works!
