While many Americans still seem programmed to run to the doctor at the first sign of trouble, more and more of us are using our own knowledge about alte
ative options to addresshealth conce
s. Modern medicine has encouraged a shift from the holistic healing aproach to the treatment of symptoms through prescription and over-thecounter drugs surgical procedures and other manipulations. Fortunately, many are beginning to realized that these measures along are not enough to ensure optimal health and, in some cases may cause more harm than benefit.

Modern medicine has provided us with solutions to the problems for which, 200 years ago, there was no hope. During a time when infectious diseases could wipe out entire populations, antibiotics and vaccines were considered miracles. Today's miracles includes pain killers, weight loss drugs sleep aids and antidepressants. These drugs have given us so much hope that we tend to place all of our trust in them and neglect our own responsibilities of eating well and exercising regularly.

Lately, prescription drugs have proven to be potentially more harmful than helpful for Americans with particular health conce
s. Our most profitable industry pharmaceuticals, has developeed from prescription drugs that were not even available last century. The danger lies in over promotion of these drugs, whose benefits are overstated and associated risk minimized. The facts on prescription drugs warrant mention.

Over 1 millio
Americans are hospitalized each year due to adverse n reactions from drugs.
Drug-induced Parkinsonism affect about 61,000 people each year.
More than 160,000 people annually are involved in automobile accidentsn associated with perscription drugs.n over 32,000 people suffer hip fractures from drug-induced falls every n year. Approximately 163,000 Americans annually experience memory loss, n either induced or worsened by drugs.
Inaddition to our seeming prescription-drug depenency, many Americans n feel that they are not getting the best treatment from their medical n doctors. all too often a drug is prescribed before the underlying causes of the problem are determined. In many cases, the symptoms abate, but the problem is not solved. Since most prescription medications has side effects another drug may be perscribed to offset the symptoms associated with initial drug, contributing to stress on the liver and kidneys.

For decades many physicians have over-prescrbed antibiotics, giving bacteria and viuses the opportunity to evolve and become resistant. More than 50 million pounds of antibiotics are produced in the United States every year. About 40 percent of these go to animals, mostly to promote growth ratter than treat disease Because of this production and subsequent overuse one serious health problem we face now is resurgence of commom infections that resistant to our medicines. For example, tuberculosis, a once-treatable infection, is stronger now; in fact it's so strong penicillin alone won't help TB patients. The same goes for many other bacteria. In light of this dilemma, is there a way for people to truly take their health matters into their own hands and succeed? It is possible to be completely healthy without prescription drugs, doctors bills and insurance payments? The Answer is yes.
