The palm islands of Dubai, also known as the palm Dubai or simply the palms, are a trio of exotic artificial islands constructed innovatively in Dubai by digging and dragging sand from the Persian Gulf. The palms are so named as their shapes resemble a palm tree and cover a large are that they can be seen from outer space. The ingenuity and creativity in the creation of these islands have resulted in being an icon of United Arab Emirates.
The three are called the palm Jumeira, the palm Jebel Ali and the palm Deira. Their construction was authorized to Nakiel developers who hired world’s experts marine and engineers and contractor’s teams, the Belgium Company Jan De Nul and the Dutch company Van Oord, both specials in land reclamation projects. The creation of palm Jumeria begin in the year 2000 followed by the palm Jabel Ali in 2003 and the palm Deira in 2004.
The aim of creating palm Dubai islands was to increase the beach front area of Dubai by 550 kilometers and provide tourists attraction. These islands include residential structures providing housing over a million people as well as for the commercial purposes.
