There is a delay of about twenty minutes for the stomach to produce the hormones which notify the brain when you are full. This does not happen until the stomach starts to stretch. When a person eats quickly, the body does not have sufficient time to for this process, thus it is likely that this person may have eaten excessively by accident.
This is the one of the reasons why you are able to eat more food when it is chewed and swallowed quickly. When food is chewed slowly and more time is taken to eat your meal, you will feel full easier.
Studies have confirmed that just by eating slower, you consume fewer calories. The lower amount of calories consumed is enough to help us lose up to twenty pounds a year! On the other hand, if we eat quickly, we usually continue eating past the point where our body has had enough sustenance. When we eat slowly, our body has time to recognize that we are actually already full and stop before excess eating occurs. If you are looking to lose weight, eating slowly should definitely be a part of your daily habits!
Also, if you were to eat slower, you will chew your food better, leading to better digestion. Digestion actually begins in the mouth, so the more work you do up there, the less there is needed to be done in your stomach. This can help lead to fewer digestive problems too. The following are some ways to help slow down you eating speed.
Firstly, you should take slightly longer eating at your meal. The more time you give your body to register the amount of food consumed, the easier it is for your stomach to produces the necessary hormones to notify your brain that you actually already have taken enough food.
Next, you should try to chew your food more. This may actually take more focus on your part, but try to chew your food for at least ten to fifteen times before swallowing them. This will help you feel fuller easier, and prevent chances of binge eating.
To conclude, if you have had difficulty controlling your portion sizes and know for sure that you are actually eating too much food at your meal sittings, try the above tips and see if they help. Preventing a second serving of food or excessive snacking can help you now get into a calorie deficit, and lose weight easier!
