Spring is here. The weather is pleasant. You and your dog are both getting restless from being cooped up all winter. Spring is the perfect time to get outdoors and play games together! Playing games with your dog can present a perfect opportunity for training. You can incorporate voice obedience commands into the excitement of the games. You both will enjoy the outdoors and get a chance to burn extra calories!
The games listed below do not require that your pet be fully trained. Although, they are easier to play if your pooch has some knowledge of voice commands. Either way, they make great starting points and reinforcement opportunities for training. If training is new for your pup, then start with a simple game of fetch to get your dog accustomed to your commands. Once he understands the game, then start enjoying new, exciting forms of entertainment.
Play a game of Hide and Seek:
This game is entertaining for the whole family; young children love Hide and Seek! Have your dog sit in one place while everyone hides. Let him know that you are not leaving him by telling him to “stay” as you walk away. Once everyone is hidden, take turns calling the dog until he discovers each person. Hide and Seek is a good way to practice the commands you’ve taught him, such as “sit,” “stay,” and “here.” Add variety to this game by hiding his favorite toys and treats. If he has a hard time finding an item, then use voice instructions to help him out.
Take him on a journey:
You don’t have to go across the country to take your dog on a trip. Many pet stores allow owners to take their dogs shopping. If you need to pick up a new collar or treats, then take your pooch along. Is there a creek or body of water near your home? Grab a toy and head out. Your pooch will love the refreshing water and the chance to fetch. This is another great opportunity for training. With all the excitement, he’ll have to concentrate more on what you’re saying. Wherever you go with your pet, make sure he’s a safe passenger in your vehicle.
Set up an obstacle course:
Set up objects around your yard that your pet can enjoy. Use a variety of items to get him to jump, crawl and run over, through, and around the yard. Lead him through the course slowly the first time. Then, let him try things out for himself by following your voice commands. Keep things safe! Never use an object or technique that could put your pet in danger.
Show off at the dog park:
You’ve taught your dog to fetch, play Hide and Seek and complete an obstacle course. Now, let him show off his new moves in front of his buddies. Your dog loves attention, so he’ll enjoy other people watching. While trying to please, he’ll also be more willing to obey your commands!
When playing games with your dog, always offer positive reinforcement. If he does not understand the game, then demonstrate it to him and talk him through it. Offer him treats for his accomplishments and attempts. Never get angry at your pooch. He’s trying to please you, and negativity will only hinder obedience training. If you are leaving your home, make sure you take plenty of water. All the exercise and training will make both of you thirsty!
Take advantage of spring, and play outside! The weather is perfect for obedience training, and your dog will love the extra attention. Even if he does not obey your every command, playing games with your dog can help in training. You can start with a simple game of fetch and work your way up to an obstacle course. Showing off at the dog park can be used in any stage of training as a way to boost your pooch’s self-esteem. Remember to never get angry with your pet during training. Instead, have treats on hand to reward his good behavior. Always make sure your pet has a safe playing environment and take water wherever you go!
